Album Review: Various Artists – Supperclub presents Nomads 7 (United Recordings)

Nomads 7

Following on from the success of Supperclub’s ‘Beauty’ compilation, Pathaan compiles another carefully crafted collection from Eastern-infused hip hop, dub and electronica. Differing slightly from ‘Beauty’, the selection here is stricter in its tone and keeps to an easier pace throughout. The array of music on offer is vast and the movement through artists brings about some surprising choices that show off Pathaan’s subtlety in compiling. As previously, Pathaan blends East and West delicately allowing and wide range of influences whilst remaining well within an easily defined sphere of tone and feeling that plays to an audience’s ear. Max Pashm’s ‘Manea-K’ provides an interesting interlude, taking the sound back from the East to Eastern Europe whilst concurrently kicking the tempo up, too. This wonderfully offsets the feel of the rest of the album with its often sparse Eastern instrumentals, laid back beats and mantra-like vocals. Dub comes from various sources including the European flavour of Lightning Head and the more rootsy ZAD who provide a deeply powerful bass sound that rolls with a brutal intensity underneath Baaba Maal’s traditional vocal approach. Pathaan has created an accessible collection for the untrained listener, yet still throws in unexpected and less obvious choices, meaning that while said listener will never be far from their comfort zone, their horizons will be significantly broadened.
