Voice winner’s single fails to make Top 40

Ah, remember the days when people used to complain that ‘X-Factor’ had ‘hijacked’ the Christmas number one spot? “If you give someone several weeks of free promotion on primetime TV before they put their single out”, people spluttered, “then of course they’re going to go to number one”.

Then the BBC launched a scientific experiment to test that rule, and thoroughly disproved it. Disproved it to the point of almost being comical. Disproved it over and over and over again.

Science won out yet again this weekend, as the winner of the third series of ‘The Voice’, Jermain Jackman, only managed to reach number 75 in the charts with his debut single, ‘And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going’, a heartfelt ballad about his refusal to break into even the Top 40. Possibly, I’ve not heard it.

Elsewhere, ‘Voice’ runner up Sally Barker faired better with her cover of Olly Murs’ ‘Dear Darlin’, which went to number 46. Unlike Jackman, she had featured in the Top 40 in the midweeks, but sadly it was not to be come Sunday for her either.

So far, the most successful ‘Voice’ finalist in terms of single chart placings is last year’s second place finisher Leah McFall, who went to number eight with a cover of ‘I Will Survive’. However, 2013 winner Andrea Begley, despite performing fairly poorly with her debut single, did score a number ten album in October.

In other news, ‘Voice’ judge Ricky Wilson’s band The Kaiser Chiefs are at number one in the albums chart for the second week running. So at least someone got something out of it all.
