Warp signs South African dance don Nozinja
By Aly Barchi | Published on Thursday 3 April 2014
Warp has signed South African producer Richard Nozinja, a pivotal force in the shangaan scene.
‘Shangaan’, by the way, is the high-speed dance genre invented in Nozinja’s native Limpopo, and which became a bit of a craze in Europe with the release in 2010 of Honest Jon Records’ ‘New Wave Dance Music From South Africa’, which features a variety of artists signed to Nozinja’s Shangaan Electro label. An LP of remixes of the compilation’s tracks by the likes of Actress, Hype Williams, Theo Parrish and Ricardo Villalobos, titled ‘Shangaan Shake’, followed in 2012.
Having sealed the Warp deal, Nozinja is to release a series of new singles by the year’s end, and will also tour with his troupe of dancers through a host of dates starting 29 Apr at Start The Bus in Bristol. Look at the course of the tour in full on Noninja’s FB page.
Meanwhile take a first step into the shangaan realm via one of its most-hyped hits, Zinja Hlungwani’s ‘Nwa Gezani My Love’. Which is legitimately incredible in every way.
