Single Review: We Were Promised Jetpacks – The Last Place You’ll Look (FatCat)

We Were Promised Jetpacks

The angry young pretenders to the Scottish indie throne are growing up, it seems. Their debut full-length released last year may have had some catchy indie-rock moments, but it still rarely rose up fairly standard guitar backed angst. With this EP though, We Were Promised Jetpacks hold back the jagged preconceptions to deliver five songs which span a much wider range of emotions.

A couple of the songs may sound familiar, with both ‘Short Burst’ and ‘This Is My House, This Is My Home’ having appeared on that debut album, though rewrites for this EP let the subtleties of strings and richer vocal performances do their magic. And the new songs compliment such creeping grandiose too, with ‘With the Benefit of Hindsight’ benefitting greatly from a persistent, marching drum build up, bringing to mind the likes of The Wedding Present and Tindersticks, rather than four rather scrawny-looking Glaswegians.

We Were Promised Jetpacks have promised much for a long time, and now they’re on their way to delivering. TM
