Album Review: Woodpigeon – Die Stadt Muzikanten (End Of The Road Records)

Woodpigeon

It’s the third long player from The Hamiltons’ Mark Andrews, and it delivers more of the lush, understated melodies we heard on his previous two albums – ‘Songbook’ and ‘Treasury Library Canada’ – making it yet another interesting record to put along with all the other fine music that has come out of Canada recently.

To take one track at random, ‘Enchante Janvier’ chugs along to a relaxed groove and features some sweetly yearning vocals. And that’s a statement which could be applied to a fair number of the tracks here. Which could be the only downfall of this album: at fifteen songs it’s a lengthy affair, and at times one track melds somewhat into it’s neighbour, without you noticing. It leaves you with a sensation that, while you’ve listened to something lovely, there’s nothing in particular that will stick in your mind for any length of time once the last (hidden bonus) track has finished.

That said, ‘My Denial In Argyle’ kicks things up a notch, with the drums and guitar even rocking out, but as it’s found at track five, the momentum tails off as you head into the second half of the album. Perhaps a judicious pruning of a couple of tracks would have allowed a couple of the more understated gems to stand out for themselves, and made the whole album a punchier listening experience.

Nevertheless, it’s a very pleasant, if slightly soporific, ride. TH
