ASH READING DECISION NOW TOMORROW
Ash are delaying there decision on whether they will play their Reading set until tomorrow morning, just hours before are due to take to the stage. The bands manager Stephen Taverner has posted an entry on the band's official website saying they are putting back their decision on whether to play from Thursday to Saturday, giving drummer Rick McMurray a couple more days to recover from the bus crash that left him with cracked ribs. Taverner said he had flown to Belfast to speak to McMurray, who was worried playing could make his injuries worse - doctors have told the drummer he would be taking a risk by playing for more than 10 minutes. The band are also due to play at an Xfm promoted gig a week today at Ocean in Hackney though the stations Christian OConnell has a fourteen year old listener lined up to fill in on drums if necessary!

MANSON ON HIS GOLDEN AGE
Marilyn Manson has described his forthcoming album The Golden Age of Grotesque as being "different and better and stronger and uglier and much more theatrical than anyone could ever imagine." In an interview with MTV he continued: "It is the most concise record we've done, so it's not as lengthy as any of the previous ones. That doesn't mean it has less content, I just think sometimes less is more. There's time to focus on how good things are if there's not as much to look at. This record is broken down to the simplest, most important thing, and that's relationships whether they're between people or between ideas.. The new album is Mansons first since he parted company with bassist Twiggy Ramirez as previously reported the slot has been filled by KMFDM's Tim Skold, who is also co-producing the LP with Filter's Ben Grosse.

SHORTLIST LONGLIST ANNOUNCED
The Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music, something of a US version of the Mercury Music Prize, have announced their shortlist for 2002, though with 75 albums on it its more of a long list. Like the Mercury Music Prize its an eclectic mix of albums Zero 7's Simple Things, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Deads Source Tags & Codes, rap veteran Masta Ace's Disposable Arts and Tom Waits Blood Money all appear in a list voted on by 23 names from the worlds of music, media and film, including Alanis Morissette, U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr, Iggy Pop, Beck, Mos Def, Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Paul Oakenfold, Jill Scott, and film directors Baz Luhrmann and Spike Jonze.
"Think of the Long List as your adventurous CD shopping list," project co-founder Greg Spotts said in a statement. "There is something on the list for everyone, and each album was hand-picked by a well-known artist, producer, or journalist." Panel members will now pare the list down by selecting 10 albums each, with the top vote-getters becoming Shortlist finalists. The winner will be selected by the listmakers at an awards ceremony in LA on 29 Oct.
This is only the second year of the award last year Icelands Sigur Ros' Agaetis Byrjun was overall winner. The full list of 75 is at www.shortlistofmusic.com

RIAA DROP ACTION AGAINST ISPS
The Recording Industry Association of America has dropped the copyright-infringement lawsuit against four internet service providers that we reported on earlier this week because the music site they had issues with - Listen4ever.com has gone off line. The site, which held thousands of tracks for downloading, was hosted in China making it hard to attack through the US counts. So the record labels targeted the ISPs that gave American websurfers access to the website. Although this particular action has been dropped RIAA officials have not ruled out future suits against ISPs saying the pull back "does not preclude further litigation if www.listen4ever.com should reconstitute itself under some new name or move to another server."

It's the hottest string of gigs this autumn and we're really proud it's NME that's made it happen. War is hell but Term Warfare will be music fan heaven." The tour kicks off on 24 Oct and visits: Birmingham Academy (24 Oct), Bristol Academy (26 Oct), Manchester Academy (28 Oct), Nottingham Rock City (30 Oct), Cambridge Corn Exchange (1 Nov), London Shepherd's Bush Empire (2 Nov). US SHOCK JOCKS FIRED
Two New York shock jocks who persuaded two listeners to have sex in a cathedral have been fired from their nationally-syndicated radio show. Gregg Opie Hughes and Anthony Cumia sparked hundreds of complaints after they challenged listeners to have sex in public places, awarding points for the most outrageous. "Based on recent events, the Opie and Anthony Show has been cancelled, and will be replaced by other programming beginning Friday," a statement from WNEW, the station that made the show, said.
The network has subsequently suspended Hughes and Cumia and its general manager and programme director; though they might have got off lightly - the couple accused of having sex inside New York's landmark St Patrick's Cathedral have been charged with public lewdness. A producer for the show who described the couple's actions in the cathedral back to the studio has also been charged as an accomplice. But a lawyer for the defendants has said the couple - Brian Florence and Loretta Lynn Harper - were just simulating sex.
The stunt has also prompted an investigation by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) after a complaint by the 350,000-member Catholic League. The FCC could revoke WNEWs licence, although the League's director William Donohue has said he no longer expects such extreme action to be taken now that the DJs have been removed. He went on to tell the BBC he was "delighted" with the outcome: "I'm very, very happy. It is an example of corporate responsibility in an age of corporate irresponsibility."
Hughes and Cumia had previously been fired by a Massachusetts station in 1998 when they ran an April Fool's Day announcement that Boston mayor Thomas M Menino was killed in a car crash.

ROCKERS AMONGST BRITISH ICONS
A new list of 100 British Icons, as voted by BBC Viewers, includes a number of music related names though all of them are men, and theyre all white. Johnny Rotten Lydon, Bono, Bob Geldof, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Robbie Williams, David Bowie and John Peel all appear in the Top 100 British icons of all time. As always these lists say more about the voters than anything else, though it should be interesting to see in what order these musical icons appear when the BBC air the countdown in October.

JACKO HAS SON NUMBER TWO
According to US news reports Michael Jackson has a second son who he has named Prince 2 (Jackos five year old first son is called Prince). There is no word on who the mother is, and whether Jacko is the natural father or if the boy has been adopted. According to People magazine the existence of the child was only discovered after Jackson introduced him to magicians Siegfried and Roy while visiting them backstage after one of their performances in Las Vegas. A spokesman for Jackson's publicist said that they would not comment on the singer's personal life.

HIVES IN LABEL FALL OUT
The Hives, who dumped Burning Heart Records for a multi-million pound contract with Universal, are denying claims by BHR that according to an existing contract their old label holds the rights to their next album. Burning Heart boss Peter Ahlqvist told NME: "Our lawyers are currently looking into the matter. Burning Heart have always been very proud to have been The Hives record company. Therefore, we are shocked to learn about the band signing a record deal with Universal, particularly since Burning Heart controls the exclusive worldwide rights to The Hives next studio album. The Hives have always been fully aware of their commitment to Burning Heart. In the circumstances, we have no choice but to vigorously protect our rights."
But the bands guitarist Nicholaus Arson has posted a message on the band website saying "BHR did not have the rights to our third album," and denying that their old label were unaware the band was looking for a new contract, "We have for some time now had extremely serious issues with the BHR and as a consequence we recently decided not to continue working with them. BHR has all along been aware of the seriousness of these matters so that when we eventually left them is not a shock to anyone."
