FINAL NAIL IN NAPSTER COFFIN
As BMG was reported to being losing interest in its online businesses, a court in the US has refused the company permission to takeover complete control of struggling file-share website Napster – the result being the firing of the company's remaining 42 staff. Judge Peter J. Walsh at a Delaware bankruptcy court said that BMG couldn't buy the company's assets because Napster's chief executive, Konrad Hilbers (a former BMG boss), had "divided loyalty" between the two companies. The news, which many see as the final straw for the former flagship download site, follows months of legal wranglings, declinging support from BMG, and internal feuds that led to many original staff, including founder Shawn Fanning, walking out.

YOUSEF OPENS HIS CIRCUS
Liverpool DJ Yousef is doing his bit to restore the Merseyside dance scene after the closure of Cream with a new club night, Circus, set to launch on 14 Sep. The DJ had originally hoped to launch the night in the Cream club, but since their decision to discontinue running their home venue he has opted for the Masque venue. An opening party will feature MYNC Project, Playmusic Leeds, Alex Wolfenden and Yousef himself.

TRAVIS ONLINE FUNDRAISER
Travis are set to do some fundraising with a new download track – ‘Love Will Come Through’ – available from the band’s official website. Fans will pay to download the track, and proceeds will go to the Spinal Injuries Association – the fundraising effort comes after the spinal injuries suffered by Travis drummer Neil Primrose earlier this year. The track is included on the soundtrack to the upcoming film ‘Moonlight Mile’. Latest word is that Primrose is expected to recover from his injuries, though no word on how soon postponed tour dates can be rescheduled.

RADIOHEAD IN THE STUDIO
Radiohead are working hard on a new album in an LA studio, fan site ateaseweb.com has reported. Working once again with producer Nigel Godrich, guitarist Jonny Greenwood has revealed via Radiohead's message board that the early recording is intense. "Colin is playing bass right now, and singing along like a loony....pretty intense stuff in here! It's day one, and going fine." It’s early days, but the band and their label hope to have an album together for a March 2003 release

THE STREETS DOWN UNDER
Mike Skinner – aka The Streets – is going down under to play the Aus Livid Festival which takes place up and down the east coast of Australia in October. Skinner lived in Sydney for a few years so should feel at home as he performs alongside UNKLE at the festival’s dance stage.

POP GO THE PROMS
Organisers of the BBC Proms have defended putting Pop Idols Gareth Gates and Will Young on the bill of their classical concert series, arguing classical and pop were no longer separate worlds. Young will perform ‘Summertime’ from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, and Gates will sing Rodgers and Hammerstein's ‘Beat Out That Rhythm on a Drum’ at the children's Prom in the Park on 15 Sep. They will then perform their current duet release 'Long and Winding Road' accompanied by the BBC Philharmonic. Nicholas Kenyon, the BBC Proms director, who has included the Tweenies, Steps and SClub7 in the children's Proms in recent years, told the Guardian the aim was to introduce a new generation to the concerts. “Gareth Gates and Will Young are two people that kids really relate to,” he said. “We have to recognise there is no longer a dividing line between the classical and pop worlds. There's an overlap. The Proms will always be a festival based on the great classical repertory. But we have to respond to what the audience listens to." He said Young and Gates would feature in a varied line-up of world and classical music.
