CHART UPDATE
A great day for new music – there’s an Elvis compilation at number one in the album chart, and a Beatles cover at number one in the singles chart. RCA’s much anticipated ‘ELV1S’ number ones compilation went straight in at number one in the album’s chart yesterday, while RCA’s Pop Idol duet, Will Young and Gareth Gates’ cover of Beatles track ‘The Long and Winding Road’ went straight in at number one in the singles chart. But in a last stand for new music – there’s an Elvis cover on the b-side of the Pop Idol single (Gareth’s version of ‘Suspicious Minds’)!

Elsewhere in the singles charts Oasis had to make do with number two for ‘Little By Little’, the second single off ‘Heathen Chemistry’. Eminem and the much talked about Aqualung track both sit in the top ten, though they both fall in position from last week. The interesting stuff appears lower down the Top 40 with new entries from Garbage (‘Shut Your Mouth’ at 20), The Strokes (‘Someday’ at 27) and the excellent Felix Da Housecat track ('Silver Screen Shower Scene' at 39).

Albums wise, with new entries for Bon Jovi (‘Bounce’ at 2), Peter Gabriel (‘Up’ at 11) and Status Quo (‘Heavy Traffic’ at 15), you’d be forgiven the last then years in music never happened. Elsewhere there were new entries from Beck (‘Sea Change’ at 20) and Ryan Adams (Demolition at 22). Madonna topping the VH1 Women in Music Chart seemed to influenced buying this weekend - two Madonna ‘best of’ albums reappeared in the Top 40 – ‘Greatest Hits’ at 24 and ‘The Immaculate Collection’ at 23.

TARRANT TO STAY
Well, now it seems Chris Tarrant will stay. Despite telling numerous interviewers he planned to quit the Capital breakfast show at the end of the year, the station have now confirmed Tarrant will stay on for 2003 to host an ‘all-new’ breakfast show. In what way it will be ‘all-new’ remains to be seen, though the time slot is likely to be shorter and later. It is likely the station will also try to develop a format that can outlive its host, who is unlikely to stay with the new show more than a year.

Capital chief exec David Mansfield told reporters: "We have been discussing a number of programming ideas with Chris and we are both delighted that he will be launching the station's new breakfast show in its first year." Tarrant added: "I just can't help it, radio is in my blood and so is Capital. I'm sorry to disappoint the competition, but I am not ready to hang up the Capital headphones yet."

Shares in Capital jumped up 30p on the announcement of the news.

MOBY SUPPORTS ANTI-WAR EFFORT
An estimated 400,000 anti-war campaigners marched on London this weekend to express their opposition to the UK and US’s stance on Iraq – a campaign supported by many UK musicians, most prominently Damon Albarn and Massive Attack’s 3D. Prior to the march Moby, writing in London, again expressed his discomfort with US policy via his website:

"The timing makes me uncomfortable because of the mid-term elections coming up. If George W is so gung-ho on removing Saddam Hussein from power why didn't he focus on it a year ago? Or why didn't he focus on it when he was campaigning for president? Or why didn't he focus on it while he was governor of Texas? Why is he only now focussing on war against Iraq? The fact that he's focussed his administration on war in Iraq right before the mid-term elections makes me very uncomfortable. It's not as if Saddam Hussein became any more evil in the last few months. He's been pretty consistently evil for the last 20 years. Not to mention Bush and Cheney's history in the oil industry and the fact that Iraq has huge untapped oil reserves. If you ask me the timing of this is incredibly suspect."

GWR LAUNCH NEW HOLDING COMPANY
Major radio group GWR will launch a new holding company, jointly owned with Scottish Radio Holdings, called Vibe Radio Services. The jointly owned group will own Vibe FM in East Anglia and Galaxy 101, the Bristol version of the dance station, which GWR acquired in a recent deal with rival radio operators Chrysalis. Why Chrysalis wanted to break up its burgeoning Galaxy network is unclear, though the sale technically puts two of the three main radio stations in Bristol in GWR’s control. Meanwhile Chrysalis, who in the same deal acquired the London based speech station LBC, will swap the station’s two services, putting the rolling news service London News Direct on AM, and the more feature based LBC on FM. Some critics have said the move is part of Chrysalis’ mission to put lifestyle and entertainment content before serious news at LBC.

REVIEW: Various - Nite:Life Danny Krivit presents Expansions (NRK)
Danny Krivit is one of those heads who’s been on the scene longer than the scene has. Starting in the 70’s Krivit’s career took him to all the seminal NY nightspots including the Paradise Garage, and put him in close proximity of people like Larry Levan and Francois K. This double CD reflects 25 odd years in music, with tracks from such a broad array of artists: those featured include 808 State, DJ Food, Blaze, Frankie Valentine and Funk Against jazz. The mix – the 11th in NRK1s Nite:Life series – is a smooth and dense mix of the house spectrum overflowing with soul and feeling. There isn’t a dud track on here: a solid set of mid-tempo house grooves from an illustrious past - absolutely gorgeous. JG

YOKO SETTLES DISPUTE
Yoko Ono has reached an out of court settlement with her former assistant Frederic Seaman, hours before the court case dealing with her lawsuit was due to hear closing arguments. Ono was suing Seaman for the theft of some of John Lennon’s personal possessions after his death, and for the breaking of a confidentiality agreement in the publishing of a book about Lennon’s last years. The settlement forces Seaman to surrender nearly 400 photos of the former Beatle and his family that he took when he worked as their assistance. Coupled with Judge Leonard Sand’s ruling last week that Seaman did, in fact, break a legally binding confidentiality agreement, the latest settlement means a complete victory for Ono.

In a public apology to Ono and her son Sean Lennon, Seaman said: "I offer no excuses for my conduct, and ask only that you can find it in your heart to forgive me. After more than 20 years, it's time to ask for forgiveness for my actions."

BBC ANNOUNCE FINAL DIGITAL RADIO PLANS
Following the launch of eclectic music station 6Music and black music based 1Xtra, the BBC will launch two more new digital channels this Autumn. The ‘Asian Network’ will be launched later this month, and that will be followed by BBC7, a speech based entertainment station promising radio comedy, drama and children’s programming.

Meanwhile Radio 1 has announced it will launch a new Asian music show later this month. Broadcast overnight Friday/Saturday the new show will feature a mix of Bhangra and Bollywood, Garage, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Hip Hop and R’n’B. It will be hosted by Bobby Friction and Nihal - both well known figures on the Asian music scene. Talking about the new show Bobby told us: "British bhangra and the Asian underground are just the next step in the evolution of music in general. They can by no means be classed as separate musical genres with their influence now being heard in American Hip-Hop and UK Garage."
The show launches at 3am on 18 Oct.

PRINCE SUES OVER ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS
Prince is suing an American website for allegedly making pirated copies of his live performances available to download. While using the internet to build a strong fan-community and to promote and sell his new music, Prince has been vocal on artist’s rights to stop illegal downloads on the internet, and has filed at least nine previous lawsuits against websites.

The latest action is against US based Paisley Park Enterprises who run FreeMyHeart.com - a website devoted to singer Me'Shell Ndegeocello. The lawsuit alleges the site broke federal copyright laws by allowing Web users to download Prince songs that included "specific information describing which day the unauthorized recording of the 'Xenophobia' concert took place." But the site’s owner Matthew Lankford claims that he simply put links to other sites which had illegal Prince downloads, and that all reference to the artist had now been removed. "One of my favourite artists is coming after me for promoting him on my website," he told reporters. "For him to seek $150,000 per song to try to ruin me for doing nothing more than promoting him is ... overdoing it."

Prince has said he plans to self-release a 3CD recording of tracks from his recent ‘Xenophobia’ tour.

WILLIE SUPPORTS EMINEM
In an interview with Playboy country legend Willie Nelson has defended Eminem’s lyrics, saying politicians and campaigners who attack Slim Shady should be thinking about bigger issues: "Rather than trying to put an end to Eminem or some other rapper, politicians should think about why they're rapping. If they are growing up in a violent ghetto, do people expect them to sing about flowers and -- whatever the hell? It's a lot easier to try to censor some kid swearing about the poverty on the street or whatever it is than to stop the poverty on the street. Solving problems is harder."

REVIEW: The Vines – Outtathaway (EMI / Heavenly)
One of my favourite showbiz rumours at the moment is the allegation that in a previous incarnation, The Vines were Australia's foremost Nirvana tribute band. Nirviner, as it were. Haw haw. Much as their past couple of singles have captured all that's vital in the three-minute-punk-pop scene, ‘Outtathaway’ descends into a bit of an atonal drag that has you wincing for the poor wee fella's voice, particularly when it's on such heavy radio rotation that you've heard it for the eighth time that day. Still, fills a void until King Adora come back. LA

ROXETTE STAR HAS BRAIN SUGERY
Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson will undergo brain surgery this week to remove a tumour. The artist confirmed earlier this month she had been diagnosed as having the tumour, now doctors have decided to operate. A spokesperson for Fredriksson told reporters: "Under the circumstances Marie is in good spirits but it is of course a delicate procedure that lies ahead. It is however clear that Marie will have to cancel her commitments for the near future." The duo’s European tour, planned to begin later this month, has been cancelled.

RADIO 2 PLAN MANICS SHOW
Radio 2 will broadcast a documentary on the Manic Street Preachers on 12 Oct featuring archive recordings made with the band at various stages throughout their rise in popularity and a series of interviews recording over the summer. The show, which will, needless to say, also deal with the mysterious disappearance of Richey Edwards back in 1995, will feature contributions from the likes of James Dean Bradfield, Sean Moore, Nicky Wire, Ioan Gruffudd, Steve Lamacq, Jo Whiley, Martin Hall, Dave Enringa and Sony chairman Rob Stringer.
