UNLABELLED PIRATE PROOF CDS WILL ALIENATE RECORD BUYERS
New research out today suggests pirate proof CDs which prevent people from making copies of albums they buy may alienate consumers. In a survey of US music fans, research company GartnerG2 found a majority of music buyers believed they should have the right to make copies of CDs they have bought, either as back up or for family and friends. Over 80% of those surveyed were not even aware making such copies, even as a back up, was technically speaking illegal. Music buyers also felt record companies should label copy-protected CDs allowing them to make an informed choice when choosing which albums to buy.

"Until technology standards are tweaked and universally implemented, mandatory labelling must be required," GartnerG2's research director PJ McNealy said. "Consumers will balk if they bring home a CD and find it won't play on every CD player they own. Since it's clear consumers perceive they have the right to make some copies, the lack of labelling will only contribute to declining revenue for the music industry as those who are still buying CDs become frustrated."

ARTISTS PERFORM TO RAISE MONEY FOR PERFORMERS COALITION
Artists from a number of different genres were on stage in New York on Monday night for the first of a series of benefit concerts for the newly formed Artists Empowerment Coalition. Hezekiah Walker, Najee, Montell Jordan, Naughty By Nature, Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, Faith Evans and DMX were among those performing. Something of an informal musicians union, the AEC is a not-for-profit coalition of recording and performing artists and music supporters which was formed to promote changes in the relationships between artists and the companies that market and distribute their creative work. The organisation came into being thanks to the campaigning efforts of the likes of Prince, DMX, Chaka Khan and law firm of L Londell McMillan.

RONI BRINGS HIS LABEL'S ROSTER TO FABRIC
Mr Roni Size is planning an exciting launch party at London club Fabric to promote new album 'Touching Down', which was released last week. The new album is out on his own Bristol based label Full Cycle - and the launch party will feature performances from most of the Full Cycle entourage. Krust, DJ Die, DJ Suv, D Product, Surge, MCs Dynamite, Verse & Tali, Influx Datum and Ganja Cru's DJ Hype will all be present at the 8 Nov launch event. More info at www.fullcycle.co.uk

GATES MAY NOT BEAT PREMIERE LEAGUE COMPETITION FOR ALBUM TOP SPOT
Earlier in the year BMG suspiciously deleted the Junkie XL Elvis remix of 'A Little Less Conversation' the week Gareth Gate's second single was released, clearing the decks for the pop idol runner up to take the top spot. Unfortunately they had less control over the albums competing for the number one spot with Gareth's debut long player 'What My Heart Wants To Say'. Word is Mr Gates won't go to number one this weekend. But what's stopping him from getting to the top? The Polydor released Nirvana Greatest Hits? The Epic released Manics Greatest Hits? Nope - the new East West released album from David Gray - 'New Day At Midnight'.

Chart insiders reckon the album top five this weekend to go David Gray, then Gareth Gates, then Nirvana, then Manics, then current number one Foo Fighters. That said the important weekend sales are still to come and it's a competitive week, so who knows for sure?

REVIEW: Desmond Williams - Delights of the Garden (Eighteenth Street Lounge)
Dreadlocked Desmond Williams grew up in Jamaica working with dub legend Scientist before relocating to New Jersey. Now he is the resident sound engineer for Eighteenth Street, which began with a collaboration with the Thievery Corporation. The sound here is reminiscent of Nightmares of Wax, though the influence is dub rather than the 90's Leeds Warehouse scene. Some of the arrangements are very well structured, and all have a mellowness infused to high levels. Through the Latin sun kissed vocals on 'Um Favor', the Air sounding 'First Touch', the breakbeat sound of 'For the Trees', and the lightly chilled beats in 'Brooklyn Blues' a nice myriad of downtempo styles are covered. ESL Music have done well again - with each release they are getting closer to creating a US East Coast Lounge style all of their own. Keep your ears peeled. PV

VH1 RENAME VIEWER VOTED AWARDS
VH1 is revamping its viewer voted US awards show. The 'My VH1 Music Awards' will become the 'VH1 Big in 2002 Awards' when it takes place in LA this December. The ceremony will keep its cheesy titled awards though - up for the Can't Get You Out of My Head (Best Song) Award category are Vanessa Carlton's 'A Thousand Miles', Sheryl Crow's 'Soak up the Sun', Jimmy Eat World's 'The Middle', Avril Lavigne's 'Complicated', John Mayer's 'No Such Thing' and Nelly's 'Hot in Herre'. The Hives, The Stokes, The Vines and the White Stripes are all up for the Garage Sale Award! Viewers vote for the winners via their website www.vh1.com.

RADIO OWNERSHIP REGULATION RELAXED
The government has indicated it will relax rules on radio ownership in the forthcoming communications bill after Capital Radio and GWR complained that their medium was subject to much stricter regulation than others. The original bill said that at least three commercial radio companies should operate in each region (so if there are three radio stations in a city they each need to be owned by a different radio group). This is likely to now be dropped to two.

NME PUBLISH COOL LIST
The NME has released its first Cool List - recognising what it considers to be the fifty coolest people in rock. White Stripes' Jack White tops the chart, apparently because "he turning down Gap, rediscovered rock's debt to the blues, and became the fire that torched the whole new rock revolution".

The top ten includes: Jack White (The White Stripes), Fabrizio Moretti (The Strokes), Dolf De Datsun (The Datsuns), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Mike Skinner (The Streets), Meg White (The White Stripes), Marcie Bolen (The Von Bondies), Craig Nicholls (The Vines), Nelly and Howlin' Pelle Almqvist (The Hives).

The full fifty and explanations of each is in this weeks NME.

OSBOURNES SERIES TWO BECKONS
MTV has announced that the second series of 'The Osbournes' will begin in the US on 26 Nov. "We are excited to invite the world into our home for another dose of Osbourne insanity," Sharon Osbourne said in a statement. "This season the show takes on a whole new meaning as we share the highs and the lows of the last six months with our viewers. With the Osbournes you never know what you're gonna get."

Meanwhile Channel 4 gives the first series its first terrestrial TV airing in the UK this weekend.

MCCARTNEY CANCELLATION GETS CRITCISED DOWN UNDER
Paul McCartney is coming under fire for canceling his Australian show. He told fans his Aus date would be postponed because he didn't think it was suitable to perform so soon after the Bali bombing where most of those killed were young Australians. But fans point out how quickly McCartney performed in New York after the terrorist attacks there, and argue that events that bring communities together are, if anything, even more important after a country has suffered a serious terrorist attack. They point out Australia has not been listed with any cautions for travelers by any Government and that no other act has cancelled an Australian tour because of this attack. McCartney is yet to comment on the criticisms.

REVIEW: Various - Gluckich V (Compost Records)
Rainer Truby comes at us for the fifth time with a trip through Brazil -
with a mix of old things and a few unreleased nuggets. Jazz influenced downbeat is the name of the game - from latin vocals to cow bells and flute - we have heard it all before but here it is all of such a high standard it doesn't matter. Stand out tracks include the Eddy & Dus drum and bossa remix of Les Gammas 'Outra Vida' with the awesome Nina Miranda (Smoke City) on vocals and the simple yet snappy vocal jazz from Jorge Ben in his 'Comanche' from 1971. 'Moonlight' by Nu Tropic brings us up to date with a darker number brimming with funk and soul, while Nicola Conte's 'Fica Mal Com Deus' does not sound over two decades old, with its dreamy vocals and floating flute. A latin take of Crystal Waters 'Gypsy Woman' comes from Montefiori Cocktail - with flute and sax for the vocal. !Muy Interesante! A good variety of crop, all good quality lounge music to have a few caprinhas to. PV
