JAM MASTER JAY: TRIBUTES AND POLICE INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE
A New York police spokesman has given a description of one of the men they are hunting in connection with the murder of Jam Master Jay. They told reporters they are looking for a 180-pound black male, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches in height. He was wearing a black sweat suit and black hat when leaving the scene. Police are encouraging anyone with any information to come forward.
Meanwhile tributes continued to pour in for the DJ as a day of mourning took place in Queens prior to the funeral later today. Chuck D, Busta Rhymes, Def Jam founder Russell Simmons and members of the Beastie Boys joined thousands of fans and Jays family to mourn the star. Elsewhere in the world stars continued to tell the media how Jam Master Jay impacted on their lives:
Ice Cube told reporters in LA: "Honestly, I wouldnt even be here if it werent for Jam Master Jay. He didnt do nothing hands-on for my career, but just being an inspiration, being a legend, showing you how to do hip-hop on a big level and being a pioneer of the game. With him, I was a friend and fan. Im just hurt that somebody knew who he was and they still killed Jam Master Jay. Knowing how much he meant to the world and they still did it. That just shows how far we've dropped and we dont give a shit about nobodys life nowadays, not even our heroes".
Aerosmith, whose 1986 collaboration with Run DMC 'Walk This Way' was a benchmark in the history of rap, told reporters: We were greatly shocked and saddened by the news of the untimely death of Jam Master Jay. When we were down and out in the depths, Jay and Run DMC came along and said "Come play on our record." Run DMC and Jam Master Jay's gift to the world was a new kind of music for a whole new generation, and their gift to us was a piece of ourselves back. Jay was scratching before anyone had the itch and was still at the top of his game when we played with him this summer. We will hear him every night when we play Walk This Way."
Reports on hip hop site www.davyd.com yesterday suggested rapper Daddy O, who is calling on rappers to drop monikers that hint at gangsta affiliations, is planning to release an anti-violence album in memory of Jay. The Self Destruction 2 compilation, which both Busta Rhymes and Chuck D are rumoured to be involved in, would raise money for various charities and programs against family violence.
Meanwhile police are still denying any obvious links between the murder of Jam Master Jay and the shooting of rap music promoter Keneth Walker who died in the early hours of Sunday morning. "At this time, we have no reason to believe that the two incidents are connected," Sgt. Elias Nikas told reporters. "I don't believe they're connected to each other." However police has subsequently admitted Walker had promoted 50 Cent, Jays young protégé who left New York this weekend after threats to his life.

UNIVERSAL JOIN OD2
Universal Music is the latest major record company to sign up to Peter Gabriels UK based digital music service OD2. They join BMG, Warners and EMI who have already joined the service, as well as numerous independent labels who struck up a deal with OD2 via the Association of Independent Music. The addition of Universal makes them the biggest source of legal music on the internet. It remains to be seen if Sony will now follow to give the service the full sweep of major labels Universal and Sony are behind OD2s main competitor, the US based Pressplay, which has everyone bar Warners signed up.
OD2, who were behind the recent Digital Download Day, requires fans to pay a monthly subscription to listen to songs on their computers or copy them to blank CDs. The service is accessed via partner websites such as those of HMV or Microsoft.

REVIEW: Various Artists Textures (Good Looking Records)
Touted as 'Classic Drum and Bass' this compo showcases more of the melodic dance edged beats from the GLO academy. Most lack the dancefloor pizzazz that Bukem craved to put out on 12 a couple of years ago. Rantoul's 'The Latter' works well - in the old school vein, 'Blackberry Jam' by Makoto is more like an off kilter Kyoto Jazz Massive: sweet, but not dancefloor material. Textures sadly falls a bit short of my expectation of Williamson's now cult label. PV

A US court has given troubled r n b star R Kelly permission to travel out of home state Illinois so he can perform at a concert in New York. Kelly's been on bail since being charged with 21 counts of child pornography. He denies the charges, that carry a maximum sentence of 15 years and a $100,000 fine, but he was ordered to not leave the state while he prepares for trial. The latest decision will bend that rule on specific occasions. Kelly will be back in court to dispute the charges against him on 20 Dec.

DONEGAN DIES
Legendary musician Lonnie Donegan, whose skiffle sound is said to have inspired John Lennon and Pete Townshend to learn to play guitar, died in Peterborough this weekend. Born Anthony Donegan in Glasgow in 1931 Donegan was key in introducing skiffle music in Britain in the fifties - a mixture of styles that traced its roots to 1920s America, blending jug band, acoustic, folk, blues, and country and western styles. While he had his own hits Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor (on the Bedpost Overnight), My Old Man's a Dustman, and Rock Island Line among them, he was probably more important for those he influenced. His track Rock Island Line is said to have inspired John Lennon and George Harrison to take up the guitar and form their own skiffle group called the Quarrymen. It was at a Quarrymen gig (at a church fete no less!) that Lennon first met McCartney. Pete Townsend first worked with Roger Daltrey when he was inspired to form his own skiffle group the Detours.

REVIEW: Ghosts Cauldron Things You Do/Vortex (!K7)
This is Kaos - from Terranova s solo project. And with one experimental hiphop 12 out this is the follow up. It is obvious that experimentation is the name of the game as Vortex is an moody electronic cut with early house and techno influences. The real treat here however is the A-side: starting of with a minimal uptempo electronic 4/4 the track moves into soulful territory a male vocal When you do the things you do - though maintaining the sweeping synth-strings. The track is reminiscent of Photeks soul vs electronica Mine To Give, and will doubtless be shifting feet on dancefloors across the nation. Solid. JG

OSBOURNES TO HOST AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS
The Osbournes have been signed up to present the next years viewer voted American Music Awards which will air live in the US on 13 Jan. "I can't wait to see what Ozzy and the rest of the family have in store for us, and I know the ABC-TV censor is already having dreams, or should I say nightmares, about their live ad-libs," awards executive producer Dick Clark told reporters.
Meanwhile Sharon Osbourne has told Barbra Walters on ABC she wished she'd never invited MTV's cameras into her home to film their fly-on-the-wall series. Saying the show had "changed us all so much," and that she regretted the fact her teenage children now had lawyers and business managers, she said: "This is definitely the last year. We can't do it anymore. In the second series, people will see what the first series has done to our lives and it will take people to the next stage. But after that, it's over."
Talking about being filmed why she received treatment for colan cancer, a condition which has driven Ozzy back to drink, she said: You know when you're sick, you want to be on your own. I can't throw up on my own and Ozzy can't get drunk on his own." However she has subsequently denied some media rumours that she will quit the show before the twenty episodes of the second season are complete.

UNIVERSAL UNDER MORE INVESTIGATION
French based entertainment major Vivendi Universal, parent company of Universal Music, which has had serious financial strife since reports of false accounting, now faces new investigations into its business operations, this time in the US. The New York attorney's office has launched a criminal investigation into the company. Details of the investigations are patchy, though it could well be into new allegations that the company, under former chief exec Jean-Marie Messier, issued misleading financial information.
A statement from Vivendi said the company "intends to cooperate fully" with the inquiry.

TABLOID BITS
Craig David has been invited to sing for disadvantaged children at the White House, but he may not be able to fit the gig into his hectic schedule. A spokesperson for David told The Sun: "He is desperate to do it. The show is for a good cause and it proves how big he is becoming in America. We've just to see if we can reschedule some dates for him to get out to Washington for the gig."
After Robbie slated the Pop Idol shows last week accusing them of being "cruel" and "messing with people's lives", Mick Jagger has revealed he enjoys the shows which he thinks are just good "fun". "I know some people say they are to blame for wrecking the pop charts but I don't think they are. Jagger told The Sun. "Pop stardom is by definition a short-term thing. The public expects pop acts to come and go. That's why it's called pop".
And finally Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has admitted he has been dating Gwyneth Paltrow though he stresses they are not an item yet! "I'm proud to be with someone who's very nice and very beautiful but she's not my girlfriend at the moment," he told The Sun. "I feel out of my depth with all this. I met her for the first time at our gig at Wembley two weeks ago. It's early days. I got her number, rang her and asked if she wanted to meet. We went out at the weekend and we seem to get on. We met up as friends and nothing has happened. We had a good time though. I don't know when we're going out again. I feel uncomfortable talking about her. We're just becoming friends."
