Taking inspiration from the likes of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones, Plants And Animals' sound has been compared to Talking Heads. The band released their first LP 'Parc Avenue' in the US in 2008 via Secret City records, receiving a nominations for Canada's Polaris Prize and gaining praise from Danger Mouse. The band are all set to release their debut UK album 'La La Land' on 13 Sep via Secret City, with the lead single, 'The Mama Papa', out on 9 Aug. We caught up with guitarist and vocalist Nic Basque to ask the Same Six ahead of their gig at The Lexington in London on 5 Aug.

Q1 How did you start out making music?
As an individual, when I was around twelve, learning Led Zeppelin songs, blues and a few weird scales to jam with my friends. As a band, in university, playing instrumental jams.

Q2 What inspired your latest album?
Playing together on the road for two years, searching for some new depth and new textures in guitar sounds, exploring with effects, trying to challenge ourselves with tighter song structures and arrangements, listening to lot of different music in the van (from old 60s rock, to Daft Punk, to African jams and new indie bands), the people we met on the road, the places we visited, the life at home with ups and downs.

Q3 What process do you go through in creating a track?
Usually it starts with Warren [Spicer, vocals] bringing kind of a blueprint map of a song, then we all explore together the structure and arrangement, see where we can take it, what are the best ideas, what makes sense. We spend lot of time in getting good sound for all the instruments, timbre of the instruments being a part of the song arrangement, we track usually two guitars and drums live with a vocal dummy track. We work around overdubs if needed, track vocals and back ups and we are done. We usually sculpt the final details during the mixing process.

Q4 Which artists influence your work?
My band colleagues, musicians (Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Ali Farka Touré, Daft Punk, David Bowie, classic Rolling Stones and Beatles), Wim Vandeykibus, les Ballets C de la B, theatre from Montreal.

Q5 What would you say to someone experiencing your music for the first time?
Listen on a good sound system, have a scotch and have a good time or come see us live.

Q6 What are your ambitions for your latest album, and for the future?
To play it live, try to get people to discover it and experience it. For the future: tour more, record a new album try new things, challenge ourselves, spend some time at home, use power tools to build stuff, try to do yoga, dance more, spend time with friends and family, jam more with friends and family.

I've long been a fan of Marnie Stern, ever since I stumbled across (and became completely obsessed with) her debut album, 'In Advance Of The Broken Arm', in early 2007. There just isn't anyone like her, despite the fact that her sound is heavily influenced by the highly technical chaos of Hella, whose drummer Zach Hill has produced and played on all three of her albums.

Hill really is the only person suitable to sit behind Stern as she runs her fingers up and down the fretboard of her guitar at mind-bending speeds and sings in that otherworldly voice of hers. Two years after her last album, 'This Is It And I Am It And You Are It And So Is That And He Is It And She Is It And It Is It And That Is That', she has announced that she will release her eponymous third album on 18 Oct via Souterrain Transmissions. The opening track from the album, 'For Ash', is available to stream and download on the label's website now.

Wyclef Jean will officially announce his intention to stand for the position of president of Haiti this week, according to Time magazine.

As previously reported, the Haiti-born R&B star was appointed "ambassador-at-large" for the country by outgoing president Rene Preval in 2007, and has led various charitable initiatives to help disadvantaged youth in the country. Though, in the wake of the earthquake that hit the country in January, Jean was accused of irregularities in the accounting of his own Haiti-supporting charity, the Yele Haiti Foundation, and later admitted that it had been "poorly run".

In a statement issued last week, after rumours of Jean's planned move into politics began to circulate, his people remained tight lipped on the issue, saying: "Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward. At this time, Wyclef Jean has not announced his intent to run for Haitian president. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately".

However, in a new interview with Time, Jean said this week: "If I can't take five years out to serve my country as President, then everything I've been singing about, like equal rights, doesn't mean anything".

He added that, at 37, he was unusually young to be running for the position, but defended his decision to move into politics now, saying: "If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another ten years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can't wait another ten years for us to bring it into the 21st century".

Already a popular figure in Haiti, particularly amongst the country's youth, it has been predicted that Jean would win a leadership election with little contest, though there is speculation as to whether he meets all the requirements of a potential leader.

Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am has spoken out against the previously reported album of unreleased Michael Jackson material due to be released later this year. Will.i.am was one of the last producers to work with the singer before his death, producing the 25th anniversary edition of 'Thriller' in 2008.

The rapper told Associated Press: "I don't think that [album] should ever come out. That's bad. [Michael] was a perfectionist and he wouldn't have wanted it that way. How you gonna release Michael Jackson when Michael Jackson ain't here to bless it? Now that he is not part of the process, what are they doing? Why would you put a record out like that? Because he was a friend of mine, I just think that's disrespectful. What's wrong with what he already contributed to the world?"

When it was pointed out that there is still a high demand amongst fans for new material from the late singer, Will.i.am added: "So what? You don't disrespect someone when they're gone ... How much can you suck from his energy? ... Freaking parasites!"

As previously reported, the album is the first release under that previously reported seven year deal signed by the Jacko estate with Sony Music earlier this year, which will also see some of Jackson's classic albums reissued, plus new greatest hits compilations and a DVD collection of all the singer's videos released.

Eminem has said that doctors in America are far too willing to hand out prescription drugs to celebrities.

Speaking to Vibe, the rapper said: "Famous people. Famous people are overdosing at alarming rates and - that almost sounded like a commercial. Wow. But they are. And it's one of those things, man. When you're famous, doctors will kiss your ass because they love the celebrity. 'Oh, I can call up Eminem and get him on the phone right now. Oh, hi Marshall, how are you doing? Do you need that [prescription]?' There are doctors that will give you certain things just because of who you are".

As previously reported, in related news, seven doctors last week escaped charges of negligence in relation to drugs made available to Michael Jackson in the years leading up to his death. The singer's personal physician Dr Conrad Murray still faces charges of involuntary manslaughter after allegedly providing Jackson with a lethal dose of the anaesthetic propofol as a cure for insomnia, which caused his death.

Ellie Goulding provides guest vocals on a track entitled 'Wonderman' from Tinie Tempah's forthcoming debut album, the singer has revealed.

She told BBC Newsbeat: "He's one of these people I believe in, and not just because of his music, but because he's a lovely person. [The track is] about not having all that much when your little and then working very hard and then having a lot more than you used to have and being very grateful. So I can relate to it - it's really cool".

Having taken time out to perform with Big Star in recent years, Posies founders Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer have announced that they will release a new album, their first for five years, on 27 Sep. Entitled 'Blood/Candy', Stringfellow revealed that the band brought in Broken Social Scene's Lisa Lobsinger and Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell to provide guest vocals on two tracks.

Stringfellow said: "It is kind of a first for us. It's a really cool spread of artists from different generations though, so it's very versatile. Our drummer Darius [Minwalla] knows Lisa, so we hung out and had some wine at this festival in Seattle and it went from there. She has a very pure voice and for me the track she appears on with me is very bombastic and over the top in a wonderfully melodic way, a bit like a Broadway song".

He continued: "It was really cool having Hugh on there because we've never had a British voice on one of our albums. It's similar to some of The Stranglers songs. He speaks the words and I thought that'd be perfect for this song. It's just so cool, as soon as he starts speaking, he goes, 'hard man' in that weird way".

Since the band began recording the album in February, of course, Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel of Big Star have both died, making it highly doubtful that they will return to that band again.

You can catch The Posies live in London at The Garage on 5 Oct.

Tweak Bird, aka brothers Caleb and Aston Bird, have announced that they will release their eponymous debut album via Souterrain Transmissions on 30 Aug.

Says drummer Ashton: "I'm pretty excited about the positivity and heaviness of it. We're happy and we're playing heavy music, and it doesn't seem like people are doing that very much".

With that in mind, Caleb added that the duo are never quite sure where they fit in terms of scenes: "When we play with heavy bands, in my mind I'm thinking 'what a great bill!' But we're not that heavy. Play with a pop band and I'm all 'hey, they write pop songs like us'".

The names of the songs on the album are these:

The Future
Lights In Lines
Round Trippin
A Sun / Ahh Ahh
Tunneling Through
Sky Ride
Hazement In The Basement
Flyin High
Distant Airways

Yeah, you're only just getting over the news that Justin Bieber has penned an autobiography (albeit an illustrated one fairly light on words), so I'm sorry to lay this one on you so soon. A new biopic chronicling the eventful life of the sixteen year old popster so far is scheduled to released in February next year. Oh, and it'll be in 3D, so you can enjoy that haircut in its full glory.

But who could possibly play Bieber? Who could capture the character of his face, the knowledge and experience held in his eyes? Why, how about... Justin Bieber. Yes, he'd be perfect. No one else could possibly pull it off. Except for perhaps James Van Der Beek. Though Bieber wins out this time because he not only looks exactly like Justin Bieber but was there when it all happened, so won't really have to rely on any acting skills too much. Maybe James Van Der Beek could do the sequel.

Directed by Davis Guggenheim, best known for directing 'An Inconvenient Truth', will be released in the US on 11 Feb 2011.

The organisers of the Save 6music protests outside Broadcasting House in London earlier this year have announced a special event to celebrate the station's continued existence, now that it has, indeed, been saved. Dubbed 6 Fest, the event will apparently feature "a diverse range of bands familiar to 6music fans, top flight comperes and 6music DJs doing what they do best - playing the most excellent tunes".

6 Fest co-organiser Georgina Rodgers told CMU: "This is very much a grass roots event being put together collaboratively by listeners, artists and DJs to celebrate the station that we love. It will mirror the spirit of the station - diverse, interesting, high quality artists enjoyed by inquisitive, discerning listeners".

The other co-organiser, Laura Payne added: "The campaign was started on Facebook, but as like-minded, passionate fans became friends, face-to-face meetings became the best way to co-ordinate the protest against the BBC's proposals. We wanted to build on this team spirit by putting on a party for the dedicated people who fought hard to save 6music, and for the 6music DJs who are delighted to be able to continue doing what they love".

It all takes place at 229 in London on 2 Oct. Tickets are on sale now from www.6fest.org, with proceeds donated to Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy.

ALBUM REVIEW: Klute - Music For Prophet (Commercial Suicide)
Drum n bass maestro Tom Withers (aka Klute) presents his sixth album, on his own label, some fifteen years on since his first releases on the seminal jungle imprint Certificate 18. And it really is a game of two halves, with the first disc firmly based in the here and now, while the second takes influence from the early 90s.

From the spacious disc one intro of the drum n bass steppa 'Knowing How to Get There' we can see this producer's skill has remained as good as it ever was. 'Will You Still Love Me' and 'Strange Dinner' lean heavily on Rob Haigh's Omni Trio soundscapes, and 'Media' plucks inspiration of Photek's housey 'Solaris LP', while 'Autumn Stone' takes us into harder breaks. The flavour these days is to have a form of world music influenced track, which Kulte does with 'Ashram', which takes influence from the subcontinent in a pleasant little roller, with songstress Lata sampled in.

heading over to the second disc, we fly into the lush old school breakbeat rhythms of 'Hypocrite', then house sensibilities show in 'Give a Little Love' and 'No Mistake'. Chill out comes in the form of the average 'Melt', while 'Pancake', ironically, is a little flat. 'Son Of Sam', though, is menacing.

All in all an average package, though with two such diverse CDs Withers shows he's still doing his own thing. And long may he continue. PV

However, luckily for viewers in the UK and Ireland, they will not be subjected to the track.

The band also launched Umbro's official England shirt ahead of the World Cup back in June or whenever it was.

As Spotify's negotiations with the major labels in order to launch in the US continue, the company has been pipped to the post by new kids on the block, Rdio, which came out of private beta yesterday. Although not a free service, Rdio offers a similar a similar subscription model to Spotify', giving users unlimited web streaming for $4.99 a month and the ability to add Android, iPhone and BlackBerry access for $9.99 a month.

However, with content on the service pulled from all four majors, plus digital distributors IODA, IRIS, The Orchard and Finetunes, indie label trade body Merlin has criticised the company for launching without a deal with them in place.

Merlin CEO Charles Caldas said in a statement yesterday afternoon: "It is incredibly disappointing that Rdio have launched their new service across North America without having finalised a deal for the world's most important independent labels and artists. We are surprised that a service, whose success would seem dependent on offering its consumers a comprehensive choice of repertoire, would launch without giving those consumers access to the leading global independent labels we represent, and their artists".

Rdio quickly responded to Caldas' statement, telling MusicAlly: "Rdio plans to offer its subscribers the widest range of music and today we announced the addition of five new indie aggregators bringing our total collection to seven million songs. It is our policy not to comment on specific deal negotiations until they're completed, so we hope MusicAlly readers will understand our reluctance to provide further detail".

Meanwhile, Spotify has refuted claims made by Billboard last week that it had been forced to go "back to square one" with its US negotiations. Recently appointed US managing director Kenneth Parks told the trade mag: "We are in fact in a good place with our label negotiations. We're confident in our US launch later this year".

Paul McCartney may appear in the next series of 'Glee', or at least some of his songs might, while Susan Boyle is set to play a dinner lady in the Christmas special, creator Ryan Murphy has revealed. Macca in particular seems to have been very keen to take a part in the show in some capacity.

Murphy told reporters: "I received some fantastic mixtapes from Paul McCartney a couple of weeks ago. I thought I was being punked! It came out of blue in a package, handwritten, and it had two CDs and it said 'Hi Ryan, I hope you will consider some of these songs for 'Glee''. I had heard that he is a fan of the show. I was gobsmacked... so of course we are going to do something with him".

Hey, record execs, are you listening? Ozzy Osbourne thinks you're disgusting. Or at least those of you signing bands to 360 deals.

Speaking to The Quietus, the Black Sabbath frontman said: "Nowadays? Fucking hell! The other day, I was informed that new bands who've just signed with their record companies have to give away part of their publishing, part of their gig money, part of their concession. What the fuck is going on? I wouldn't like to be one of the bands of today. It's fucking disgusting the way they treat the bands".
