PLAYLIST: BENNY DAVIS
Going solo for this year's Edinburgh Festival with his show 'The Human Jukebox', The Axis Of Awesome's Benny Davis shows off his ability to play any song he's heard just once. For part of the show he plays mash ups similar to (and indeed including) The Axis Of Awesome's 'Four Chords', then for his finale he crams as many audience suggestions as possible into one improvised mix - a skill apparently honed as a busker in Sydney. We caught him on a break from playing music and asked him instead to pick some more>>

APPROVED: BYRTA
Formed by folk singer-songwriter Guðrið Hansdóttir and Janus Rasmussen of electronic outfit Bloodgroup, Byrta released their eponymous debut album earlier this year. Their dark-edged songs skirt the pop sounds of the 80s and the best of contemporary Scandinavian fare, with lyrics all delivered in their native Faroese. Having got to work on writing songs for the project after meeting while living in Reykjavik, they began pushing out tracks via SoundCloud earlier this year more>>

NEW MANAGEMENT AT MAMA AFTER JAMES PUSHED OUT
London-based live music firm MAMA & Company is prepping itself for a new management structure following the sudden departure of CEO Dean James last week.

James morphed what had been the Channelfly group into MAMA in 2005 in partnership with then co-CEO Adam Driscoll, subsequently overseeing the acquisition of the Hammersmith Apollo and most of the Mean Fiddler venue and tour promotion business.

After MAMA was itself acquired by HMV in 2010, James became the sole CEO of the business, before spearheading a management buyout of the company (minus the Hammersmith Apollo) just under three years later as the HMV Group headed towards administration.

James’s backer in the MBO was Lloyds Development Capital, but it seems that the equity group has now pushed the MAMA chief out; though officially the former CEO is “on leave”.

The company’s Chairman, Richard Thompson, also boss of sports-focused talent agency M&C Saatchi Merlin, is taking an executive management role in the interim while a new management structure is put in place. It’s not clear what impact, if any, the executive changes will have on the recently revamped MAMA company, and its venue, festivals and music services businesses.

A spokesperson for MAMA told CMU: “Dean James is currently on leave and, in his absence, responsibility for day to day functions is being handled by Chairman Richard Thompson. MAMA has just completed a highly successful festival season, which culminated in the sold out Wilderness Festival”.

UPDATE 15 Aug 12.30pm: A spokesman for LDC has refuted the claim that Dean James has been “pushed” from his role at MAMA, confirming he is currently “on leave” and adding that no further comment will be made at this time.

Any further updates to this story will be posted on our website.

SWITZERLAND SEEKING NEW ANTHEM
The Swiss Public Welfare Society is trying to find its nation a new anthem, and is asking Swiss citizens to send in their ideas for new lyrics to replace the text in Switzerland's present national hymn, the Swiss Psalm.

Speaking via The Guardian, the contest's leader Lukas Niederberger said the Psalm's "outdated and awkward" current script, which starts "When the morning skies grow red... thou, o Lord, appearest in their light" has "more or less nothing to do with Switzerland", adding: "It's a nice song to God, a great hymn, but it doesn't say anything about our society's virtues or values". Freedom, democracy and openness, he later said, were all potential themes to consider, whilst the main no-nos are racism, sexism and excessive nationalism.

Contest entries can be written in any of Switzerland's official languages (German, French, Italian and/or Romansch) and given in between January and July 2014, after which the winning lyrics (if there are any, given Nierberger et al's claim that they are "free to say there isn't a winner") will be pitched to the Swiss parliament in 2015.

ERROLLYN WALLEN JOINS THE MUSIC MANAGEMENT
Classical composer Errollyn Wallen has joined the roster of artist management company, The Music Management.

Amongst many accolades, earlier this year Wallen won the Ivor Novello Classical Music Award (the first woman to do so) for her piece 'Principia', which was used in the opening ceremony of last year's Paralympic Games.

The Music Management's Paul Carey told CMU: "Errollyn is incredible and unique in her field, spanning the gap between classical and contemporary as an artist and composer. I don't profess to know everything about the classical world, but I do recognise an incredible talent. Our aim is to help Errollyn achieve her goals by scoring music for movies, to develop Errollyn as an artist and to put contemporary projects together around her with interesting artists and musicians".

DAMON ALBARN AND NOEL GALLAGHER WORKING ON "A LOT OF STUFF"
Hey, we all know Damon Albarn and Noel Gallagher are best buds now, but where's the cheesy dewy-eyed duet the world wants, nay needs? Well, on its way. Maybe. And there might be a lot of them. Or so says Alex James. And he knows a thing or two about cheese.

Anyway, asked about Blur's one-time rivalry with Oasis for the website of the Sziget Festival, where Blur played at the weekend, James said: "Damon and Noel Gallagher are working together on a lot of stuff, so whatever was back then is not relevant anymore. But we have to add that young bands today are all very nice. We were totally intolerable".

MICHELLE OBAMA BACKS HEALTHY HIP HOP LP 4 KIDS
Michelle Obama is involved in a new hip hop compilation LP featuring Matisyahu, Run DMC's Darryl McDaniels, Ashanti and Blink 182's Travis Barker.

Titled 'Songs For A Healthier America', its free September release is designed to send a message to kids that they need to exercise and eat right, exactly like Travis.

America's First Lady, who chairs Partnership For A Healthier America (aka the initiative behind it all) and is the face of the Beyonce-approved Let's Move! Campaign, will appear in various promotional clips that'll be shown in schools.

Here she is having a great, healthy time with Jordin Sparks and Doug E Fresh in the LP's lively lead single, 'Everybody'.

JAMES MURPHY MAKES ANTI-SUMMER SUMMER MIXTAPE
LCD retiree James Murphy has made a semi-seasonal mixtape featuring "not particularly summery summer jams" by the likes of Black Flag, Sylvester, John Cale and Suicide. So, that'll go nicely with the debatable weather we've been having lately, I'd say.

James, meanwhile, gives it this concise billing: "It does what it says in the title. It's a cassette mix".

Nice. Play the mix, rain and/or shine, via Rdio.

JACK WHITE RE-RELEASING WHITE STRIPES' ELEPHANT VIA THIRD MAN
Not happy to stop at its 'great idea' to translate Jay-Z's 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' to vinyl, Jack White's Nashville-based label/wax factory Third Man now has its sights on a wider re-release of The White Stripes' iconic 2003 LP ' Elephant'.

On sale as a limited Record Store Day special earlier this year (on Record Store Day, in fact), the re-mastered 'Elephant' will be made available to all (this on all-black vinyl) on 27 Aug via the Third Man site.

Third Man write: "This album is dedicated to the death of the sweetheart and is still as poignant today as when it was originally released in 2003. We draw a firm line here... you can't consider yourself a White Stripes fan without this record on your record shelf".

MICACHU HAS MUSIC CREDIT ON GLAZER'S NEW FILM
Mica Levi, aka grime wunderkind Micachu, has written new music for 'Sexy Beast' director Jonathan Glazer's years-in-the-making new sci fi feature 'Under The Skin'.

Starring Scarlett Johannson as - says its official caption - "a voracious alien seductress who scours remote highways and backroads for human prey", the film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on 3 Sep. Its trailer hasn't been released yet, so this still will have to suffice until it is.

LIVE NATION BOSS SELLS A THIRD OF HIS SHARES
Live Nation's share price had a bit of good old fashioned wobble yesterday following the news that the live giant's CEO Michael Rapino had sold over a third of his shares in the company, which would have netted him in the region of $11.7 million.

Rapino sold the shares as they reached a 52 week high last week. According to Bloomberg, a spokesman for Rapino said the sale was simply for "estate-planning purposes". The Live Nation boss signed a new five year contract with the company late last year.

SARM STUDIOS SELLING OFF OLD EQUIPMENT, AS REDEVELOPMENT BEGINS
Hey, if you're in the market for some old studio gear, then keep reading. As it prepares for three years of redevelopment work, Trevor Horn's Sarm Studios is selling off a sizeable amount of studio equipment this Sunday.

"Some of it works, some of it needs repair... but it's all definitely seen some action", the company said, when announcing the event. So that's something to look forward to.

The redeveloped Sarm will see the complex reduced to two recording studio spaces, both located under ground, while the upper levels of the building will be converted into office space and nine luxury flats. Meanwhile, at the end of this month, staff and others currently occupying Sarm Studios are due to move to a new space on Ladbroke Grove called Sarm Music Village, which includes two studios and ten programming rooms.

The company also plans to open a new studio called Sarm South Coast in Lymington, a sort of counterpart to Sarm West Coast in LA.

Discussing the redevelopment, Trevor Horn said: "This redevelopment is an exciting new chapter for Sarm Studios and will allow us to bring the latest technology into the building to allow musicians' to work and apply modern techniques but within a very established location that has produced so much fantastic music over many years. There will still be a first class analogue, old-fashioned studio for people to utilise but there is a strong focus on the future and a we want to supply the very best production, programming and publishing facilities to bring Sarm into the 21st century".

He continued: "With advances in technology, the industry has changed almost on its head - albums can be recorded in someone's back bedroom nowadays with a Mac and mic. It's important that we continue to move with the times and with the demand of artists - to not only provide years of music heritage but to provide an amazing, world class creative hub with the best in sound quality available to record great music in".

Taking place this Sunday, entry to the Sarm Studios Yard Sale will cost £5, with proceeds going to Father Jim Teeling, Trevor Horn And Jill Sinclair Trust Fund, which helps needy children in the Philippines. More details here.

ITV STILL WANTS COWELL BACK ON X-FACTOR UK
ITV is putting pressure on Simon Cowell again to return to the judging panel of the UK version of 'X-Factor'. Cowell's on-screen involvement in the talent show is back on the agenda as the commercial network negotiates a new contract regarding its airing of the Syco chief's two talent show franchises, 'X' and 'Britain's Got Talent'.

Although still one of the biggest shows on British TV, and still bigger than the BBC's buy-in attempt to compete, 'The Voice', 'X-Factor UK' has seen its ratings slide since Cowell stepped away from on-screen involvement in order to concentrate on 'X-Factor USA'.

There have, of course, been reports of ITV pushing for Cowell to return to the UK version of the show pretty much ever since he left it On the latest chatter, Cowell's PR rep, Max Clifford, told reporters: "Obviously, everybody to do with the show wants Simon because he gives it an extra quality, we understand that, but with his commitments [in the US] he simply can't be in two places at once".

As previously reported, there were also rumours recently that Cowell had decided not to return to the UK edition of the show this year due to that whole having-a-baby-with-a-friend's-wife thing.

In related news, the New York Post has claimed that Cowell is considering selling some or all of his stake in the Syco empire, a joint venture with Sony Music. Sony itself might be a bidder for some of Cowell's equity in the music and media company, though the Post indicates that albeit informal conversations may have also taken place with third parties.

PRINCE TWEETS, SHARES 'SELFIE'
Prince (that's the real Prince, not this Prince) became a Twitter king yesterday when he began tweeting via his live band 3rd Eye Girl's feed. He started with all the usual 'shares' really, like this 'amusing' 'meal pic' and this, his first ever 'selfie', which isn't technically a selfie.

Post that initial silliness, he added a new 3rd Eye Girl track titled 'Groovy Potential' which, I have to say, fails to match its title in a) grooviness and b) potential.
