Warner announces deal with Chinese internet giant
Warner Music has announced an alliance with Chinese internet giant Tencent which, says the major label, is the "first-ever master distribution partnership between a major music company and a leading internet provider in Mainland China".

Under the deal, Tencent will distribute Warner's catalogue and new releases (including music from Chinese label Gold Typhoon, which Warner acquired earlier this year) to all domestic non-tel-co-based online audio services in China, while the major will also forge promotional partnerships with various platforms operated by the net firm, including the QQ Music streaming service and various video and gaming based channels.

Confirming the deal, Warner Recorded Music's President of International, Stu Bergen, told reporters: "Since expanding our presence in China with the acquisition of Gold Typhoon, we have focused on establishing market-moving partnerships with innovative players such as Tencent that are successfully harnessing the incredible demand for music in one of the world's most rapidly changing territories".

He went on: "Our exceptional teams have forged this partnership to help advance licensed music services and create new artist development possibilities. Providing music fans with access to high quality music, and the right mix of regional and global artists, will be integral to the growth of the digital music sector in China".

For Tencent, Senior Executive Vice President Dowson Tong added: "Leveraging WMG's rich portfolio of artists, this strategic partnership will offer fans in China an extensive stream of entertaining and high-quality music content that is well-managed and protected under the license agreement. We are looking forward to integrating the music from WMG's talented artists into our products and services, bringing the user experience and enjoyment to a new level".

London's Buffalo Bar closing, Liverpool's Kazimier and Nation at risk
The gig-hosting Buffalo Bar in Highbury, North London, is to close on 31 Dec after over fourteen active years.

A statement from Buffalo Bar HQ posted on Facebook reads: "We have been served a very short notice period from our new landlords. They remain undecided what to do with our space. It will remain closed for the foreseeable future. Make of that what you will".

It went on: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved with us; all the promoters, the DJs, the many thousands of bands and, of course, all the staff who've pitched in over the years".

The bar will host one 'Last Stance', a live event on NYE, as a fundraiser for its full-time, soon to be unemployed staff. Tickets and details here. In the meantime, bands who've played its stage over the years will be headlining a series of farewell dates, starting with The Subways on 3 Dec.

Elsewhere in (possibly) bad news for independent music venues, the Kazimier - and also Cream-hosting nightclub Nation - in Liverpool may apparently be 'at risk' thanks to, reports the Liverpool Echo, "multi-million pound plans to rip up Wolstenholm Square to create new apartments, shops and leisure facilities". No one ever got properly excited by leisure facilities. NO ONE. Anyway, said plans will be proposed to the local council next week.

Promoter of the Nation-based Medication night Marc Jones, one man hoping the local council throws the plans back in the developers big fat faces, informs The Echo: "We are returning to the dark days before the Capital Of Culture. The live music scene in Liverpool is dying on its feet. Every city has the same city centre now which has the same shops where no-one can find anything independent. But we want bands to be playing here, in smaller, grottier venues. We want to create a hub of independence. That is what made Liverpool famous. Plans like this take the soul out of the city".

Sinead O'Connor breaks up with her manager, literally
Sinead O'Connor has placed a 'manager wanted' ad (kind of) online after having split with her last manager, for personal reasons. That is to say, they were having an affair that went bad. Anyway, it's happened in the midst of post-release promotions for her latest LP 'I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss', aka not a great time to be manager-less.

Writing in typically candid Sinead O'Connor style via her blog, the singer says: "Shit day from hell. Have had to leave my manager. Not that we didn't get on well, we got on too well, both fell equally in love. Had a month long affair, but he has a girlfriend, so naturally I gotta vanish. Extraordinarily sad and depressing, but there it is. Another manager bites the dust".

"So now", she adds, "I need to find a new manager and I haven't a fucking clue where to start. If anyone knows anyone who might be interested in managing me could they please email me at iamwonderful@me.com. I do not have a career in America, my career is European-based, so it needs to be someone who is familiar with the European market. While waiting for the right permanent manager I could do with a 'temp' so if you know anyone please let me know".

BASCA offers support to Taylor Swift, switches debate to publisher/label royalty split
The British Academy Of Songwriters, Composers And Authors has issued a statement offering its support for Taylor Swift in her decision to pull her catalogue off Spotify. Though the statement really addresses songwriter concerns that record labels (and their recording artists) receive such a large cut of digital royalties compared to songwriters and their publishers, something raised in that recent CIAM report and which is likely to be ever more loudly debated in the next year or so.

Gary Osborne, who chairs BASCA's Ivor Novello Awards, said of streaming royalties: "No matter how bad it is for the artists it's a whole lot worse for the writers! People don't understand the difference between the writer and the act, but artists receive a far higher income from streaming than the people who write the songs. This is because deals were done first with the record labels that represent the artists, after which a few scraps seem to have been tossed to the songwriters and their publishers as an afterthought".

BASCA Chairman Simon Darlow added: "The Fair Trade Music study just published by North American and Canadian composer organisations reveals that the label/ publisher split is, on average, around 95/5 in the label's favour - this cannot be justified".

And BASCA's CEO Vick Bain followed on: "BASCA totally supports the principle that authors should have control over the distribution of their music. The rates received by composers from the streaming services - especially YouTube - are so dismal that very few of the people who create the incredible songs that drive and support the music industry can make a decent living in the digital environment".

So, there you go, YouTube actually got namechecked, and Taylor Swift's music is on there.

Irving Azoff hits out at YouTube's failure to engage songwriters in Music Key prep
Talking of songwriters flexing their muscles in the digital royalties debate, as YouTube got all showy offy about its all-new Music Key flim flam earlier this week, Irving Azoff told The Hollywood Reporter he was preparing to remove the music of 42 of his clients from the Google-owned platform. Why? Because YouTube, like pretty much every digital platform, has focused on securing the sound recording rights, assuming the music publishing rights will just follow through, most likely via the collective licensing system.

As previously reported, veteran artist manager Azoff has launched a new business within his company Azoff MSG Entertainment called Global Music Rights which is seeking to specifically represent the 'performing right' elements of the song copyrights of big name artists, rights that, in the US, would have previously likely been repped by collecting societies BMI or ASCAP.

Like BASCA, Azoff reckons that in the streaming domain song rights - as opposed to recording rights - should be earning significantly more in royalties. And Azoff reckons one way to achieve that is for songwriters to withdraw from the big collecting societies - and the extra copyright rules that govern them - and license direct.

Of course, the digital firms would likely argue that they are paying as much as they possibly can for access to the combined music rights catalogue, and if songwriters and their publishers want more money they need to take it out of the cash currently being paid to recording artists and their labels.

Azoff might argue that the digital firms can, actually, afford to pay more overall. Though because he reps the interests of artists rather than big copyright owners, he possibly wouldn't mind if song rights getting more meant recording rights getting less.

Most of his clients are both recording artists and songwriters, but by industry convention they will earn a much bigger cut of the income that comes in through their songs (and publisher) than their recordings (and label), because of the way label/publisher contracts are structured. Azoff's artists, therefore, will earn more overall if more digital royalties come in via music publishing rather than the record companies.

Either way, you can expect Azoff to become ever more vocal about digital firms that he reckons are forgetting the songwriter side of the music licensing equation.

After criticising YouTube for doing just that, Azoff told The Reporter: "The way fans listen to music is evolving daily. GMR is going to give songwriters and publishers an opportunity to engage in meaningful licensing for their intellectual property. The trampling of writers' rights in the digital marketplace without any regard to their contribution to the creative process will no longer be tolerated".

Dave Grohl doesn't fucking care what you pay for his music
Like every musician being interviewed this week, Dave Grohl has been asked what he thinks about Taylor Swift pulling her music down from Spotify. In Grohl's case, it was Digital Spy asking the obvious question, how do you feel about people getting your music for free on the streaming platforms?

"Me personally? I don't fucking care", Grohl announced. "That's just me, because I'm playing two nights at Wembley next summer". Oh, ladidah, look at David with his big stadium-filling riffs.

"I want people to hear our music, I don't care if you pay $1 or fucking $20 for it, just listen to the fucking song", he continued, before realising he possibly sounded like a bit of an arse and adding: "But I can understand how other people would object to that".

He went on to refute Swift's claim that all recorded music is art with an inherent monetary value, which is good because that's nonsense. Next you'll see graffiti artists standing next to their latest tag collecting change in a bucket.

He continued: "You want people to fucking listen to your music? Give them your music. And then go play a show. They like hearing your music? They'll go see a show. To me it's that simple, and I think it used to work that way. When we were young and in really noisy, crappy punk rock bands there was no career opportunity and we loved doing it and people loved fucking watching it and the delivery was completely face-to-face personal. Nowadays there's so much focus on technology that it doesn't really matter".

Dave Grohl and his Foo Fighters are playing two nights at Wembley Stadium next summer, don't you know.

The Osbournes coming back to TV for short 'catch-up'
'The Osbournes', as in the MTV show following the crazy, beautiful (mainly crazy) lives of Ozzy Osbourne and family that ran from 2002-2005, is coming back to TV soon via a mini-series of seven-ish new episodes.

Sharon Osbourne broke the news earlier this week on US chat-show 'The Talk', claiming that the idea to film the "catch-up" was "all my husband's doing" because, she says: "He looked back on his life and he said 'I wish we could've done the show now when I'm clean and sober'".

"It's not as much coming back as a proper series, but as an update", she added.

New breakfast event for music community kicks off on Sunday
A new industry event kicks off this weekend at The Jam Tree in Chelsea called the Sunday Girl Breakfast Club, which aims to provide a regular forum for London's female singers, songwriters and musicians to exchange ideas and advice.

Organisers say the new event is about "bringing female musicians and creatives together for a unique experience in which they can all support each other, and encourage each other... a welcome break from a career in which competition can be all too consuming". In amongst breakfast, networking and chatting, each event will include a few talks and live performances.

The new event is one of a number of initiatives to provide a forum and voice for women working in the music business, an industry which - despite many of its biggest selling acts being female - is still a male-dominated industry, and one that is still routinely accused of sexism.

The organisers go on: "Of course, just because SGBC is supporting women, doesn't mean the chaps can't get involved! If any males want to show their support for creative females, they are absolutely welcome. So any male or female session musicians, music students, arrangers, lyricists, producers, engineers, photographers, journalists, website creators, stylists, promoters, anyone who may want to network with artists and songwriters, are all of course welcome to join in the festival of oestrogen".

Azealia Banks still pissed off with Disclosure (mainly the ugly one)
Remember when Azealia Banks excitedly tweeted that she'd been collaborating with a then very buzzy Disclosure, only for the dance duo to play down their hook up with the rapper, calling it more of a 'meeting'?

Banks then claimed that her no-longer-Disclosure-buddies had subsequently backtracked, admitting their 'meeting' was definitely a full on music making meet-up, though she later announced the results of their collusions would not appear on her then still distant album because the boys had been rather "rude" about her in an interview.

Well, anyway, with 'Broke With Expensive Taste' finally 'out there', you might think Banks is now properly getting her revenge by the absence of any Disclosure on there. But no, she's still pretty miffed about the whole episode. And she's particularly angry at the ugly little dickheadish one with the pimples around his mouth. Ten bonus points and eternity in hell for anyone who just went, "oh yeah, I know which one she means".

Asked about the whole thing by The Guardian, Banks says: "I tweeted that I just had the best session with Disclosure, because I was such a fan-girl and I was so excited to have met them. But I guess their thing was: 'What if the song isn't that good and you hyped it up?' But I was like: 'So fucking what?' So they tried to be, like, assholes. And the next day they went to the media and they were like, 'Oh well, I don't know why she's so excited, because we haven't even finished this song or written a hook for it'. I mean, come on!"

She expands: "I want to punch one of them in the face - the little one. The ugly one. I want to hit him so bad. I saw him at the airport in Australia and I came over to him and I was like, 'Hello? Like, what are we going to do with this song?' And he was just being a dickhead. I started crying, I was so angry. I wanted to hit him. I cannot stand that little boy with all those pimples around his mouth. I love their music though".

Oh well, at least she loves their music. And I'm sure they love her music too. Even the ugly little dickheadish one with the pimples around his mouth. • Once they've got their 'hits medley' over with on tonight's BBC Children In Need, the newly-reconciled S Club 7 will, following a weekend of rest and leisure time, get together at 10am at a secret site in London for a press conference. • Ty Segall is releasing an album. A live album. A live album recorded in San Francisco. A live album recorded in San Francisco that is the fifth instalment of Castle Face's Live In San Francisco series. It'll be out on 26 Jan. Here is 'What's Inside Your Heart'.

• Gang Of Four have only gone and teamed up with Alison Mosshart from The Kills. They recorded a song together called 'Broken Talk' and it'll appear on the band's new album. 'The band' being Gang Of Four. I would have said 'the duo' if it was going to be on The Kills' album. I don't think there even is a new Kills album. Anyway, here's the song.

• Scandinavian dark-pop artist Karin Park has detailed the follow-on to her excellent 2012 LP 'Highwire Poetry'. 'Apocalypse Pop', as the new set is titled, will be released on 2 Mar 2015. Here's lead single 'Look What You've Done', which fits the whole 'apocalypse pop' thing like a glove.

• David Bowie has gone and released a video for 'Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime)', one of a pair of new tracks on his forthcoming 50th anniversary hits compilation 'Nothing Has Changed'. Do you hear that, Selena Gomez? Fifty. Years. Go see 'Sue' here, and listen to its B-side of sorts, 'Tis A Pity She Was A Whore', here.

• Matthew E White is going to play a show at the Barbican on 10 Mar. I know what you're thinking, what does the E stand for? I don't know, but if I'd have to guess I'd say it was Emmental. Why not buy a ticket and ask him if I'm right?

• Paris Hilton has literally been named the best new female DJ in the world at the (obviously public voted) NRJ DJ Awards in France. Which is pretty good going, because according to the NRJ website she wasn't nominated for anything. And also, there was no Best Male Newcomer award, so making hers gendered is a bit weird. Anyway, she turned up to collect her award in person at a ceremony this week. Because when's she going to get that opportunity again? Probably next year, I guess.

Noel Gallagher is really angry about coffee. Because people will happily buy coffee, but often they're less willing to buy his albums. Imagine!

Speaking to Noisey, the former Oasis guitarist said: "It infuriates me that people are more willing to sit in a coffee shop and spend a tenner on two coffees, talking about the weather with their friends, and that coffee will last 45 minutes, yet they will physically get angry at you for asking them to buy an album for a tenner that will last a lifetime and might tell you about yourself and might even change your life. It's a strange moment we're in where people are willing to spend money on shit".

I'm not sure where Noel is going to buy his coffee, but if it's costing him a fiver per cup, he's getting ripped off. And his new album is £8.99 if you pre-order it on iTunes at the moment. So the economics of this argument are way out.

But comparing music and coffee is something people do on a regular basis and it never gets any less stupid. Stop comparing music and coffee. They are different things.

For starters, in Noel's imagined situation, two friends sit down and talk for 45 minutes while drinking ludicrously expensive coffee. If they're happy to pay that much for coffee, they're probably both utter bastards, but at least they're maintaining a friendship.

And while I'll quite happily spend a certain percentage of my time sitting all on my own listening to music, sometimes I like to go outside and engage with the people I call 'friends'. So the coffee isn't really the thing here, the coffee buying is merely what allows me to sit somewhere warm and dry while I have a conversation. There might even be music playing in the background.

But that's not actually the comparison people usually make. Usually, when people make this comparison, they say something more simple like, "Oh, you know, the thing is that nowadays people are happy to pay £2.50 for a cup of coffee on their way to work, but they won't spend 99p on a download from iTunes".

Now, even if you bought my critique of Noel's specific scenario, you might now be sitting there thinking "that is a good point, people do spend money on coffee without thinking about it'". But you are wrong. It is not a good point. How are these two things similar? They aren't similar. We buy each of them for entirely different reasons. In different places. And we get entirely different things out of them.

Coffee is more like live music, if anything. It's made right in front of you and the effect you get from it is an instant back and forth between you and it. A coffee seller might reasonably ask why people are willing to pay £50 or more to see a concert that might be disappointing when for £2.30 they can get a cup of coffee which they can be reasonably certain will be made to a high standard. Except that wouldn't be a reasonable thing to muse, because like all comparisons of coffee and music, it's fucking stupid.

Anyway, sorry, this wasn't really about Noel Gallagher. It was more about me. Beef Of The Week #231 is more Andy Malt v 'people who think that comparing music to coffee is a good idea'.
