iHeartRadio to expand into Canada via Bell Media alliance
As Pandora plans to expand its reach worldwide this year, its main rival in the US - iHeartRadio - which is getting close to catching up its competitor in terms of userbase, has confirmed it will go live in Canada in 2016 via an alliance with the country's Bell Media company.

iHeartRadio is the digital platform of US radio giant Clear Channel, of course, which liked its online venture so much it rebranded the whole company as iHeartMedia. The service offers a personalised radio service of the Pandora model as well as access to content from across iHeart's existing network of AM and FM stations.

Likewise, the Canadian version of the service will pull in content from Bell Media's traditional radio outlets, as well as offering some personalised radio goodness. The alliance will also see the iHeartRadio brand properly launch in Canada, with an accompanying events programme as already exists in the US.

According to Billboard, the partnership between Bell and iHeart was initiated by the former, and specifically its recently appointed President Of Entertainment Production And Broadcasting, ex-Universal Music exec Randy Lennox.

He told the trade mag: "I had admired the iHeartMedia radio brand from afar in my time at Universal, thinking what an immensely ubiquitous and beloved brand this is. So upon arrival at Bell Media, we went to New York and had a series of meetings with them about how our assets were mirrored. We are taking the position that we are iHeart North, so to speak, the Canadian franchise of iHeartMedia, which includes its events, its concerts, its digital platform, its consumer electronics position, and so on".

In the US, iHeart has used its existing AM/FM stations as a massive marketing platform for its online set-up, while the radio firm's existing network of sales teams seek advertisers for the service, which currently has no premium option so is entirely dependent on ad sales. Bell Media will presumably do the same. Though no word as yet on how much traditional radio content will be shared between iHeart US and iHeart Canada.

Elsewhere in iHeart news, the media firm has also announced a new alliance with Universal Music centring on virtual reality technologies, which are insisting on being a talking point again in 2016, though some people reckon this time the tech might just live up to the hype.

The alliance will see the music major and radio giant "connect artists, music fans and brands and sponsors in a series of revolutionary, fully immersive entertainment experiences". Ah, "fully immersive experiences", that takes me back. I bet there'll be some "emotional connections" and "revolutionary marketing" by the time this partnership has gone through the motions.

Confirming the VR tie-up at the CES shindig in Las Vegas, Universal Music big cheese Lucian Grainge said: "At UMG, we are focused on harnessing cutting-edge technology to pioneer new creative and commercial opportunities for artists, labels and fans. By combining iHeartMedia's music events and hundreds of millions of listeners with the ability of our artists to forge powerfully emotional connections with their fans, we are ideally positioned to use VR technology to create authentic experiences that benefit our artists, consumers and marketing partners". See, told you, "emotional connections".

Adds iHeartMedia top dude Bob Pittman: "Our greatest strength at iHeartMedia is that we curate for our listeners - in this case, working with UMG to create a completely new entertainment experience using state-of-the-art VR technology. And now, as advertisers seek to tie their brands and products to music and artists in innovative ways, we can use our industry-leading reach and best-of-breed music events to unlock the combined power of music and VR as a revolutionary marketing tool".

And there you have it. Universal and iHeartMedia, keeping it (virtually) real.

New boss confirmed for US indie labels trade group
America's indie label trade group A2IM has got itself a brand new CEO in the form of Richard James Burgess, previously business head at not-for-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the record label of America's Smithsonian Institution, and Chairman of the board over at, oh, well, A2IM.

He replaces Rich Bengloff, who stood down from the top job at the label group last year. Molly Neuman, who had been filling in on an interim basis, announced she was leaving to take on a Head Of Music role at Kickstarter last month and that a full-time replacement would be announced imminently.

Confirming his new gig, Burgess told reporters: "I am honoured to have been chosen by the board to lead A2IM into the future. A2IM is the vital voice for independent labels - the small and medium-sized businesses that have grown to command more than a third of domestic market share for recorded music. We will continue to grow; we will spotlight the impact our members have on jobs and revenue; and we are determined to build greater accord within the music industry".

He added: "We will persist in our quest for equitable conditions for artists, musicians, songwriters, publishers, and labels big and small. Our label members deliver the greatest diversity of choice in recorded history, and we will work to unlock the value inherent in this pinnacle of popularity".

Secretly Group co-founder Darius Van Arman will take over as Chairman of the A2IM board, while Hopeless Records owner Louis Posen will take Burgess's seat on the board.

Universal Music renews deal with PlayMPE promo service
Few things in the history of humanity have brought together such a disparate conglomeration of distinct and diverse characters in an alliance of united cohesion as the music promo service PlayMPE.

Because however much the music critics of the world may differ on the merits of this record, or the artistic value of that song, or who exactly it is who will be the "next big thing", and why we even bother asking such a question, given the hit rate of the average next big thing list is likely no higher than statistical science would otherwise dictate, the one thing that unites music journalists everywhere is the single fixed firm fact that PlayMPE is the shittest, most badly thought out, most unhelpful, unfriendly, unfit for purpose technology to have ever been embraced by a record industry which has dabbled with a fun factory full of shit, badly thought out, unhelpful, unfriendly and unfit for purpose technologies.

So good news everybody, PlayMPE maker Destiny Media Technologies has renewed its partnership with Universal Music to continue providing its PlayMPE global distribution service to the world's biggest music company!

"We are very happy to announce that we have extended our agreement with UMG", says Destiny Media Technologies CFO Fred Vandenberg. And why wouldn't you be? Uniting the world's music journalists in a sea of beautiful harmony. "The renewal is guaranteed to generate at least the same amount of revenue annually as in the previous year". Oh yeah, that too I suppose. "We feel that the renewal of this contract is an important step as we continue to position the company for growth and profitability in the years to come".

Or, as music journalists are prone to say, "Oh well, at least it's not CRight".

Joe Parry joins Inside/Out
Joe Parry has joined music PR agency Inside/Out, it has been announced. Parry previously spent four years at Division and before that worked for 9PR and A Star PR.

Inside/Out boss Adrian Read told CMU: "We're really pleased to have a publicist of Joe's calibre joining the Inside/Out team. Not only has Joe repeatedly proven his ability to deliver meticulously constructed print and online PR campaigns, but he is immensely well liked within the music industry and therefore a great addition to the team on all fronts".

Inside/Out's current roster includes Lady Gaga, Chvrches, Alt-J, George Ezra, Mogwai, Izzy Bizu and Foxes.

Latest CMU Insights seminars programme kicks off later this month
The next edition of the CMU Insights evening seminars programme 'How The Music Business Works' kicks off on 18 Jan, with eight two-hour seminars taking place each Monday night into March.

The course provides a comprehensive overview of the music business in 2016, investigating each of the industry's key revenue streams, the deals artists do to unlock that revenue, and the tools and techniques employed to build a fanbase for new talent. Along the way there is a particular focus on music rights, social media and music PR.

The course is led by CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke, who says: "Our seminars programme provides both a beginners guide to the music industry, but also an overview of current trends and recent developments. We get new starters from across the music sector, but also more experienced music people who want a refresher, or a catch up, or who know one strand of the industry very well, but recognise that with everything in flux, it pays to fully understand how the various parts of the business fit together".

The seminars take place each Monday at 6.30pm in Shoreditch. People can book into individual sessions at £49.99 per seminar, or the whole course for just £299. Info and bookings here.

Labour appoints new culture spokesperson following top team rejig
The Labour Party has made Maria Eagle its Shadow Culture Secretary following a top team rejig that saw party leader Jeremy Corbyn fire his existing culture spokesperson, Michael Dugher, who only took on the role last September.

It's thought that Dugher was axed from Corbyn's shadow cabinet because he had been too critical of the party's leader who, of course, was a controversial choice for the leadership in various circles, and not least among more centrist Labour MPs like Dugher.

Eagle moves into the culture role from the shadow defence brief, which is technically a demotion caused by her difference of opinion with Corbyn over nuclear weapons. Though Eagle said she was "pleased" with her new appointment, identifying press regulation and the ongoing review of the BBC as key areas of interest.

Lemmy 1945-2015
Motörhead frontman Lemmy died on 28 Dec, four days after his 70th birthday and two days after being diagnosed with an "extremely aggressive" form of cancer.

Born Ian Fraser Kilmister in Stoke-On-Trent in 1945, his family later moved to Anglesey, where he picked up his nickname Lemmy at school. Although he adopted and was best known by this name, he claimed not to know its origins.

He began playing guitar with various bands in the 1960s, signing his first record deal with the short-lived Rockin Vicars in 1965. He also worked for a time as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix. His rise to fame began when he joined Hawkwind as bassist and vocalist, and during his four years with the outfit - before being fired - he developed a distinct style for himself and the band.

After Hawkwind, Lemmy formed a new band initially called Bastard, though they decided to rebrand as Motörhead after it was pointed out that the original name would prevent them from performing on 'Top Of The Pops'. It was with Motörhead that Lemmy really cultivated the sound and image for which he will be remembered, immortalised by his biggest hit, 1980's 'Ace Of Spades'.

Lemmy was the only constant member of the band's 40 year career, which spanned 23 studio albums. They performed their final live show in Berlin just over two weeks before Lemmy's death, though the frontman had started to show signs of ill health earlier in the tour. His death also comes less than two months after that of former drummer Phil Taylor.

In a statement announcing Lemmy's death, Motörhead said: "We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren't words. Please... play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy's music LOUD. Have a drink or few. Share stories. Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself".

Survived by his son Paul, Lemmy's funeral is to be live-streamed on YouTube this Saturday.

Natalie Cole 1950-2015
Singer Natalie Cole died from heart failure on New Year's Eve after a period of illness; she was 65. In a statement, her family said: "It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our mother and sister's passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived... with dignity, strength and honour. Our beloved mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever".

The daughter of Nat King Cole and former Duke Ellington Orchestra singer Maria Hawkins, Cole was born in 1950. She began performing from an early age, her first appearance at six when she sang on her father's Christmas album. But her first real success came with the release of her debut solo LP, 'Inseparable', in 1975, which also gave her a top ten single in the US with 'This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)'.

Her success continued through the 1970s, although in the early 80s her popularity waned and her music career began to be overshadowed by reports of a battle with drug addiction. Though by the end of the 1980s Cole enjoyed a resurgence, leading to 1991's 'Unforgettable... With Love', an album of covers of standards previously performed by her then late father, whose vocals also appeared on a version of title track 'Unforgettable'. The album has since sold over fourteen million copies.

In 2008 Cole announced that she had Hepatitis C, and the following year she suffered double kidney failure, undergoing a successful transplant following a public plea. She continued to perform until recently, though had to cancel a number of shows - including one on New Year's Eve - shortly before her death. She released her final studio album, 'Natalie Cole En Español', in 2013.

Cole is survived by her son Robbie Yancy.

  Approved: Steve Mason - Planet Sizes
It's always a reassuring moment when Steve Mason returns with new music, so how nice of him to get in so early in the new year with 'Planet Sizes', the first single from his latest solo album 'Meet The Humans'.

The follow-up to 2013's 'Monkey Minds In The Devil's Time', a political concept album he described as "one long song [with] many different moods, emotions and messages", he takes a different and more conventional approach on 'Meet The Humans', offering "an album where each song is a separate entity, where there is no great narrative running through it".

And so it's hard to know what the rest of the album, due for release on 26 Feb through Domino's Double Six imprint, has in store. As a starting point though, 'Planet Sizes' is very promising. Recorded, as was the whole record, with Elbow's Craig Potter as producer (in his first production project outside his own band), it's unmistakably a Mason composition, but given a bigger, bolder sound that feels like a shift from much of his earlier work.

Laurie Anderson name Guest Director for 50th Brighton Festival
Laurie Anderson will be the Guest Director of the Brighton Festival for its 50th year, it was announced this morning. She is the first musician to take up the role since Brian Eno in 2010, though her involvement in the arts obviously spreads much further than music. She will oversee the programme for the 2016 edition of the arts festival, which takes place in May.

"I'm so happy to be serving as Guest Director of Brighton Festival in its historic 50th year", says Anderson. "Our theme of home and place is especially relevant with so many people in the world on the move now looking, like all of us, for a place we can belong. I've been part of the festival several times and it was exciting to watch the city become the heart of so much art. I'm looking forward to being part of it this year".

Clearly hoping that we're going to put ourselves through the ordeal of doing another one of these in December, Brighton Festival boss Andrew Comben said he was both "thrilled" and "honoured" to confirm "such a major international figure as Guest Director for Brighton Festival 2016. In our 50th year, it feels right to reflect on the original intentions of the Festival which from the start were about celebrating international culture, the new and the avant-garde".

"Laurie Anderson has been experimenting, creating and challenging audiences all over the world for almost as long as Brighton Festival has existed", he continued. "Indeed, she's been a part of the festival's journey in past years with some very special commissions and appearances in the city. She continues to break new ground in her own work and through collaborations with some of the most promising artists of the future, and we are looking forward to celebrating all this in what we hope will be a very special 50th Brighton Festival in May".

The Brighton Festival takes place this year from 7-29 May, with the full programme due to be announced 17 Feb.

The Joy Formidable announce tour dates
The Joy Formidable have confirmed another a handful of low-key UK tour dates to get themselves match ready for the release of their new album and subsequent touring later in the year. The dates will also coincide with the release of the first single from the new LP.

Says frontwoman Ritzy Bryan: "We're really looking forward to playing these intimate UK dates in February. That same week, we'll be releasing the first single off the new record and then enjoying the live shows to preview some other new material. Later in May, there will be a much longer run of the UK and Europe, once the album has been released".

• 7digital has announced plans to acquire Snowite, a French firm that similarly offers digital music solutions to third parties. Snowite is currently in 'procédure de sauvegarde' under French insolvency law - which is similar to when US firms have 'chapter 11' bankruptcy protection - and means the French Commercial Court will have to approve the deal.

• Universal Music in the US earlier this week named ex-Sony Music man Ashley Newton as a new President for its Capitol Records division. He'll also be Exec VP Creative & Special Projects for the Universal Music Group at large. And you gotta love those special projects. UMG boss Lucian Grainge is "looking forward" to it. Me too.

• If you had money on musician Jen Cook and manager Jason Burns joining the board of the US-based artist advocacy group the Future Of Music Coalition, then well done you. You should buy me lunch to celebrate. I'll have steak and chips, thanks.

• Pop and celebrity PR firm Hackford Jones is winding down its operations, with both Hackford and Jones set to launch their own agencies to do more publicity gubbins. One will be called Simon Jones PR. That's the one being run by Simon Jones. Which is a bit boring. Jonathan Hackford should launch Not Simon Jones PR.

• Yahoo is shutting down its video platform Yahoo Screen. That's where the web firm's content alliance with Live Nation sat. But that partnership's fan will be pleased to know it will live on within Yahoo Music.

• Emika has successfully crowdfunded the recording of her first symphony, raising 25,470 euros - surpassing the 20,000 euros she was seeking. "This is post music industry heaven for the independent creative", says the musician.

• Savages have released another track from their imminent second album, 'Adore Life'. Watch the video for 'Adore' here.

• Having been tipped by a load of those new year tips polls they have now, Blossoms will release a new EP, 'At Most A Kiss', on 19 Feb. Here's the title track.

• Also out on 19 Feb is the new album from Ra Ra Riot, 'Need Your Light'. Here's new single 'Absolutely'.

Radio Today to launch radio station about radio stations
Radio Today has announced the launch of a new radio station aimed at people who work in or are interested in radio. Called inRadio, it will focus on the inner workings of the radio industry and its programming, meaning you can know what's going on with radio all around the world without having to actually listen to any of it. Apart from this one station, obviously.

The new venture will broadcast from Radio Today's London HQ, pulling in a number of existing radio industry podcasts as well as new and archive content from the UK, US, Australia and Europe. It will apparently be available "from 24 hours a day" when it goes live, suggesting that there will be occasions when it's on air for longer.

"It's always puzzled me why the radio industry doesn't have a radio station of its own", says Radio Today founder Roy Martin. "Even dogs have their own radio station!"

"inRadio will be full of parody songs, spoof commercials and highlight the best of radio around the world", he adds, possibly solving his own puzzle.

The new station will launch at 10am on 16 Feb.
