#VoteForMusic asks the music community to identify the big issues
So, four weeks today it's the General Election in the UK, and five weeks today The Great Escape will be kicking off for the tenth time in Brighton, which both seem like perfect reasons to #VoteForMusic.

Because, you see, music development organisation The Hub has this morning teamed up with the Music Venue Trust and The Great Escape to launch #VoteForMusic, an online campaign encouraging music fans and the music community to discuss what music-related issues they would like to see the next government tackle, whatever form that new government may take.

Musicians, music business people and music fans are all encouraged to post their hot topic to Twitter, Facebook or Instagram - with the hashtag - either as simple text, or even better in a photo like the ones already posted at instagram.com/thehubuk. And once a vote has been cast, voters are encouraged to nominate other artists or music people to likewise state which music issue is at the top of their personal agenda.

The Hub's Julia Payne explains: "#VoteForMusic does what it says on the tin. From today - four weeks from E-Day - right up till the polls close on 7 May, we're encouraging music fans, musicians and other industry professionals, anyone who cares about music, to cast their vote for the 'killer' music industry issue they want the next government to address. #VoteForMusic is apolitical, it's not about attacking or supporting any one party, we just wanted to encourage political engagement and remind people who love music that it's good to have a voice".

The Hub will count up all votes cast and the most voted for issues will be revealed at The Great Escape in Brighton on 15 May, at a keynote session presented by CMU Insights which will also see TGE co-founder Martin Elbourne, Cooking Vinyl's Martin Goldschmidt, Yellowbrick Music's Meredith Cork and artist Dan Le Sac each deliver a message to the newly appoint government.

Confirming TGE's involvement, Great Escape Director Kat Morris says: "This year The Great Escape is putting the spotlight on great new music from the UK. We know that the music industry contributed £3.8 billion to the UK economy last year, and just looking at the new artists playing the festival this year, we know that the future is looking good too".

She adds: "We need a framework in place to help assure those future successes, and that's where government can help. With everything about to change in Westminster and Whitehall, now is the perfect time to reach out to the music community, and to music fans, to find out their priorities and concerns. And that's why we're backing #VoteForMusic - it gives fans, musicians and others working in music a chance to have their say".

So, click here for more information from The Hub, and then tweet, Facebook or Instagram your vote with the hashtag #VoteForMusic.

Lil Wayne moves Cash Money lawsuit to New Orleans
Lil Wayne has moved his ongoing lawsuit against Cash Money Records from New York to New Orleans, where he originally signed his deal with the label in 1998.

As previously reported, Wayne claims that Cash Money has failed to pay him a $10 million advance that was due on his yet to be released 'Tha Carter V' album, and that as a result he should be cut loose from his contract with the record company.

Following media reports earlier this week that the case had been dropped entirely, the rapper's lawyer Ron Sweeney told Rolling Stone that the re-filing had been a pre-emptive move.

He explained: "We gave [Cash Money] until 6 Apr to file an answer. They said they were going to challenge the venue, so at that point, it was a waste of time and money, so we all agreed that we would dismiss the action [in New York] and Wayne and [his record label] Young Money would re-file in New Orleans".

Reiterating that the case otherwise stood as was, a statement from Sweeney's team added: "The claims previously asserted by Lil Wayne and Young Money LLC against Cash Money for substantial monies owed and breach of fiduciary duty have not been settled and will be prosecuted in Louisiana as expeditiously as possible".

And so, the case continues.

Suge Knight given time to find new lawyer in robbery case
With his murder charge still working its way through the courts, Suge Knight appeared in front of a judge on separate charges of robbery yesterday, stemming from an altercation with a photographer last year. However, proceedings were postponed to give Knight time to find new legal representation, yet again.

The court was told that Knight's most recent attorney on this case had filed a motion saying that he no longer wished to represent the Death Row Records founder. Asked if he wanted new representation, Knight said that he did, and so he was given until 27 May to find someone willing to take the task on.

Knight also complained that he had been brought into the court chained to a wheelchair, after collapsing a number of times at recent court hearings. The former rap mogul insisted that he could walk, and was told by the judge that he would be allowed to in future.

In the robbery case, Knight and comedian Katt Williams are accused of taking a photographer's camera outside a Beverly Hills studio last September. Knight was charged in February, after his arrest for a hit-and-run incident that left one man dead in January.

A preliminary hearing in that latter case is now set for Monday, where Knight will be represented by Matt Fletcher.

Marilyn Manson to press charges over Denny's punch
Marilyn Manson has said that he will press charges against a man who allegedly hit him in the face at a branch of Denny's in Alberta, Canada at the weekend.

Early reports claimed that Manson got into an argument with a group of people in the restaurant in the early hours of Sunday morning. It was claimed that the punch was thrown by a man in the group, after Manson called his girlfriend a "bitch".

The singer's manager told TMZ that this was not the case, claiming that two girls had approached Manson and asked for a photograph, for which he politely obliged. Then, out of nowhere, the man appeared, punched him, and elbowed his make-up artist in the face too.

Both are apparently pressing charges over the incident.

Vivendi placates noisy shareholder
Bad news for fans of feuds between activist investors and large conglomerates with interests in music and entertainment. Come on, we all know who you are. Yes, I'm talking to you.

Well, Universal Music owner Vivendi has ended its public spat with P Schoenfeld Asset Management, the hedge fund which controls just under 1% of the entertainment group. How? With some filthy loot of course. Well, some pristine euros anyway.

Vivendi has confirmed that it will propose an additional dividend payment of two euros a share at its upcoming general meeting, and in return PSAM has agreed to withdraw resolutions it planned to submit at the same meeting to force the firm to pay out nine billion euros to its shareholders. The hedge fund added that it is now confident in the Vivendi management's current strategy for growth, it having previously called for Universal Music to be sold off.

The shareholder deal reduces the cash pile available to Vivendi to fuel acquisition plans in media and entertainment, funds raised by the company selling off most of its telecoms and gaming assets in recent years. It remains to be seen what it means for Vivendi's rumoured and somewhat ambitious plot to bid for Sky plc.

New President for Warner's label services business
Warner Music yesterday announced the appointment of Eliah Seton to the role of President at its label services company ADA Worldwide. Seton move overs to the services unit from Warner's core label business, where he was SVP International Strategy & Operations.

Based at Warner's New York HQ, he will continue to report into the mini-major's President International for Recorded Music, Stu Bergen, who says: "Eliah brings the ideal combination of business savvy, global experience, and a genre-spanning love of music to his new role. He can deliver on multiple fronts for our partners, from strategic innovation to revenue diversification".

Seton himself added: "I'm looking forward to harnessing our firepower in support of independent music across the globe. So much amazing music is being created today by indie artists, from both established and emerging labels. We are passionate about helping to grow this dynamic and vibrant community. The ADA team is the best in the business, and I want to thank Stu for this wonderful opportunity".

T In The Park ready to adapt site plans to accommodate ospreys, says DF chief
So, how's everyone's favourite bird-actually-gets-to-decide-where-a-festival-happens promotion going? Well, DF Concerts chief Geoff Ellis has been talking to BBC Radio Scotland about his company's previously reported bid to move T In The Park to the Strathallan Estate in Perthshire.

Some of the people living near the site have raised objections to the festival moving to their neighbourhood, though the bigger problem is some ospreys who also reside next to the estate. Because the law says a big noisy music festival cannot happen within 2500 yards of nesting ospreys, and Team T would rather not have a big no-go zone cutting into their proposed festival site.

Attempts have been made to persuade the birds to nest a little further away, but the RSPB said earlier this week that the ospreys had reappeared on the estate and quickly set up home in their usual nesting spot, scuppering current plans for the festival.

But not so, says Ellis, whose on-site osprey specialists - because that's the kind of people festivals need to have on the staff these days - say that the birds are yet to pick a site for their 2015 home. And either way, Ellis is confident the birds and his festival-goers can happily co-exist.

He told the BBC: "We are in daily contact with the RSPB and we will be working very closely with them. Whichever nest the birds take to we will work with them to agree an appropriate exclusion zone and manage it accordingly. We guarantee to do that and we'd be bound by the law to do it anyway. We will work with the RSPB so that T In The Park can continue at its new home at Strathallan Castle and the ospreys can co-exist with the festival".

Insisting that he is still confident DF will get the go-ahead from the local council to use the Strathallan Estate for T, he said that his team were also capable of adapting the way they use to site to accommodate the local birds of prey. Noting that DF had to work around a pipeline at their old site at Balado, he said his team were used to changing site plans.

Ellis: "We used to have to [change our site plans] at Balado almost every year with the changes in the HSE guidelines to the pipeline. The one thing about a music festival is you build it up from scratch each year. It's just a case of re-plotting positions of things on site. It's extra work obviously but certainly it's not a show stopper in any form".

YouTube to launch ad-free paid option
YouTube is set to launch a new paid subscription option - expanding on its Music Key experiment - which will allow users to remove adverts from other parts of the video platform.

In an email to YouTube Partner account holders yesterday, the Google-owned service noted its recent innovations, saying: "Since inviting hundreds of thousands of fans into our YouTube Music Key Beta, we've seen tremendous engagement. And we've seen an equally enthusiastic response for our new YouTube Kids app, designed to give families a simpler and safer video-viewing experience - it's already crossed two million installations in less than one month".

Then the big reveal: "We're excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favour of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we'll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue".

Continuing it said: "Launching a new paid offering will require us to update your terms through your Creator Studio Dashboard - a process that should feel familiar to anyone who went through a similar process three years ago when we began distributing and monetising your content on mobile devices. Today, mobile represents over half of all watchtime and mobile revenue is up 200% in the last year. Just as with mobile, we're confident this latest contract update will excite your fans and generate a previously untapped, additional source of revenue for you".

Exactly how the new paid tier will work, or how much it will cost, is yet to be announced. It's also not clear what "tremendous engagement" with the lacklustre Music Key really means, though seemingly enough to convince the company that applying a subscription model to the whole site is a goer.

Madonna's Meerkat video premiere falls even flatter than expected
Madonna's new single is called 'Ghosttown', so it seems appropriate that she chose the new app network being abandoned most rapidly - Meerkat - to premiere the video yesterday. And even more appropriate that when the allotted launch time arrived, no video emerged at all.

Having heavily trailed the big Meerkat reveal on Twitter, as well as behind the scenes footage on Tidal, when the time came no video arrived, with those attempting to view it met with an error page instead.

Meerkat CEO told TheNextWeb that there were "no scalability issues", seemingly placing problems at the singer's end instead. The stream was deleted shortly after it was supposed to go live, but they'll apparently have another go today here.

In February, Madonna premiered the video for 'Living For Love' on Snapchat, despite Radio 1's continued insistence that she shouldn't bother trying to engage The Kids.

If you want, you can just watch a trailer for 'Ghosttown' on YouTube here.

Commercial radio stations to air old charts in traditional chart slot
Now, let's see if you, like CMU's esteemed editor Andy Malt, can go from "what a nonsense idea" to "actually, I'd quite like to listen to that" without taking a breath on hearing this news.

With chart time officially set to shift from Sunday to Friday later this year as a result of that pesky global release date the 'man' is forcing on us all, two different commercial radio stations have come up with a clever wheeze to satisfy all those people who yearn - yearn I tell you - for some chart-style goodness alongside Sunday tea.

Both Absolute 80s and three local stations owned by UTV will start airing a 'classic chart' each Sunday in the 4pm slot currently occupied over on Radio 1 by 'The Official Chart'. So basically they'll count down a chart from the past (just the 1980s in the case of Absolute, it might come from the 70s or the 80s on the UTV stations), presumably as if it's new.

And while that might sound like a tiresome gimmick, if they actually play the charts-from-the-past in full, it would be a fun way to be reminded of old tracks that just never get played on the radio anymore. Most of them will have been forgotten for a reason, of course, but there might be some gems in there too.

UTV wins with this venture, though, because it's only gone and hired the chart man himself (to anyone over 35), the one, the only, the 'kid', Mr David Jensen. Who says this: "I've always loved counting down the Top 40 for the nation and I'm really excited to be able to bring back the charts from years gone by in my 'Flashback 40'".

So there you go. Let's all get our cassette players out and pirate the fuck of the proceedings shall we? No. Let's not.

Approved: The Wit And Wisdom Of Nigel Farage
To coincide with General Election week, on 4 May Alcopop! Records is set to release a single by the one and only Nigel Farage. Yes, the UKIP leader. It will be called 'The Wit And Wisdom Of Nigel Farage'. It will be entirely silent. The B-side will be a remix by Enter Shikari.

The release is a homage to Stiff Records' 1980 parody release 'The Wit And Wisdom Of Ronald Reagan', which featured 40 minutes of silence over two sides of vinyl. Alcopop! founder Jack Clothier explains: "We've always thought that Stiff Records' Reagan record was about the best thing that's ever happened, and it felt like it was the right time to take a leaf out of their book".

He continued: "We're not a massively political label, and we're not trying to tell people who to vote for. We're just genuinely terrified at what could happen to this country if people listen to the slick, media savvy cult of Farage rather than actually looking at his policies. So anything we can do in our small way to make people question his political motives is something we're delighted to be involved in".

This isn't Alcopop!'s first brush with UKIP, of course. Earlier this year, Alcopop! Records had a run in with the party when Clothier managed to buy the domain name of its official website when it appeared to lapse. Unfortunately, the site was restored to UKIP before it could become a homepage for the United Kingdom Indie Parties Party.

A proportion of proceeds from the sale of the Farage record will go to the Migrant Rights Network. Listen to the whole release in full here.

2 Chainz and Diplo sample $100,000 mineral water
Did you know that you can pay $100,000 for a bottle of mineral water? No, neither did I. So thanks to 2 Chainz for bringing this to my attention, with his ongoing YouTube series for GQ, 'Most Expensivest Shit'.

2 Chainz and Diplo met with "the only water sommelier in America" who, after fobbing them off with some water that only cost $13 and $20, cracked out the proper stuff, Beverly Hills 90H2O, which purports to be "the first sommelier-crafted water in the world". I know, I couldn't believe it was the very first either, but apparently this is a market that's yet to be flooded. Flooded! Ha! I'm funny.

"What are you paying 100,000 for?" asked 2 Chainz, reasonably. It turns out that much of the cost isn't actually for the water, rather what comes with it. As well as the H2O, you get a diamond and white gold lid on the bottle, four glasses and a case to carry it in.

Although Diplo and 2 Chainz noted that the water was nice, the rapper's conclusion was this: "The most expensivest water, when you can just drink rain - it almost seems like if you put a diamond on something, they gonna run up the tab on you ... both of us have acquired expensive taste, neither one of us believe we should pay $100,000 for a bottle of water".

So what did we learn? Well, I guess don't all rush out and buy a bottle of Beverly Hills 90H2O. And watch out for people putting diamonds on stuff just to ramp up the price. If only I'd seen this video before I bought these bloody uncomfortable socks.
