Approved: Basia Bulat

Canadian Basia Bulat recently released her fourth album ‘Good Advice’, marking a shift in sound away from the folk leanings of her earlier work. A varied record that could be broadly generalised as pop (certainly more pop than her past output), it’s a collection of strong and interesting sounds that would be deserving of her third Polaris nomination, if it comes.
Tracks like ‘Fool’ and ‘Infamous’ show a versatile talent, as Bulat experiments in new musical territories, the unifying sound that holds the whole record together being her distinct and characterful voice.
Because timing is my strong point, she has just completed a UK tour in support of ‘Good Advice’. However, before she and her band head home, they will be stopping at the ‘Later… With Jools Holland’ studio this week, so the chance to catch her in action is not entirely lost.
