Approved: Bodymove at Egg

Club Tip CMU Approved

Jerome Sydenham

Right, hope you’re all refreshed after last weekend’s Carnival action (you did all go to Carnival, right?) and ready for another round of partying. Well, that’s good to hear, because I have twelve hours of house for you this Saturday at Egg’s Bodymove night.

Headlining is Jerome Sydenham, one time Atlantic Records A&R man, who worked with the likes of En Vogue and Ten City, and who then set up the brilliant Ibadan label with Kerri Chandler. He’s in high demand at the moment, and you always know you’re going to get a proper house set from him.

Also on the bill are Ibiza resident Willie Graff, who has been immersed in the island’s house music culture since the tender age of thirteen and has picked up a thing or two (quite a few more than that, actually) about it since then, and Nathan Coles, co-founder of Wiggle, the club night which was in part responsible for the development of tech house.

Saturday 1 Sep, Egg, 200 York Way, London, N7 9AX, £13 – £20, 11pm – 11am, more info from www.egglondon.net

Crunch meeting due next week as Europe’s investigation into Universal’s EMI bid reaches final stage

Business News EMI Sale Timeline Labels & Publishers Top Stories

EMI

Despite various delays, the regulatory investigation in Europe into Universal’s bid to buy the EMI record company looks like it’s entering its final phase, with Business Week reporting that reps from national competition regulators within the European Union will next week be consulted. If they give the latest proposals the nod, approval subject to concessions could be announced by 19 Sep. The deadline for conclusion is currently 27 Sep.

As previously reported, despite initially saying no concessions should be required to get regulator approval for its ambitious EMI acquisition, Universal bosses subsequently proposed to sell off a significant portion of EMI’s European assets in order to get European Commission approval for their deal. Those proposals included offloading EMI units in various European countries, and the Parlophone and Chrysalis labels in the UK.

Though opponents to the deal continued to argue that any divestments to secure deal approval should include the sale of global rights in key catalogues, and it’s thought the final proposal to be shared with national authorities next week will include the global sale of the all important Parlophone label (sans The Beatles catalogue, obviously).

Since Universal conceded that some substantial sell-offs would be required to win deal approval in Europe, some have speculated that the enforced offloading of catalogues and European units could result in some substantial losses for the mega-major, ie it would have to sell the divested EMI assets at a price lower than that it is committed to pay current EMI owners Citigroup, pro rata.

But one almost guaranteed bidder for some of those EMI assets, the boss of BMG, Hartwig Masuch, had told the Financial Times that he thinks there will be enough interest in most of the EMI catalogues and units up for sale – and Parlophone especially – that Universal should be able to sell those assets on at the price it has paid for them.

Confirming he was “very interested” in acquiring some of EMI’s recording catalogues (despite the current incarnation of BMG being primarily in the business of music publishing rather than recording rights), Masuch said he had already entered into non-exclusive negotiations with Universal, and that his company’s owners – German media giant Bertelsmann and equity group KKR – were “very supportive” of plans to buy a bit of EMI.

He added that if BMG was to acquire a sizable share of the offloaded EMI units, giving it an interest in sound recordings more on par with its publishing business, it would in essence create a fourth major music company, allaying – perhaps – those concerns that the demise of EMI has created a music rights industry dominated by just three major players (ie Universal, Sony and Warner – the former two of which, of course, were in part elevated to their current uber-size by each acquiring half of the original BMG major music company).

If Universal does get approval for its EMI deal in Europe, all eyes will then fall onto America’s Federal Trade Commission, which is considering the proposals in the States, where there has been considerable political interest in the big music deal. Traditionally you’d expect the US competition regulators to be less severe than their European counterparts, though no one seems certain which way this one will go. No formal concessions have been proposed in America yet, though opponents to the deal have called for divestment proposals Stateside to match those in Europe.

Though some are still lobbying the FTC to block the deal outright. That includes the American Antitrust Institute, that raised concerns about the EMI acquisition just this week. Noting that a combined Universal/EMI would have had 51 of the titles in the Billboard Top 100 for 2011, the AAI said in a letter this week: “We urge the Federal Trade Commission to enjoin [prohibit] the transaction and preserve EMI as a fourth major music label in the already concentrated recorded music industry”.

As the AAI mainly exists to campaign for more aggressive anti-trust regulation, its opposition to the Universal/EMI deal isn’t surprising, of course. Nevertheless, Universal spokesman Peter Lofrumento issued a statement refuting the Institute’s claims, telling reporters: “Our acquisition of EMI will create even more opportunities for new and established artists, expand the marketplace with more music and support new digital services. We are working closely with the Federal Trade Commission and remain confident of regulatory approval”.

Elsewhere in Universal news, the major reported earnings of 88 million euros for the most recent quarter from revenues of 961 million euros. Revenues were down on the same quarter in 2011, but profits were up.

Chris Lighty 1968-2012

Business News Obituaries

Chris Lighty

The US hip hop industry, and the wider music business, was in shock yesterday following the untimely death of Chris Lighty, one of the American industry’s most savvy urban music entrepreneurs, and most recently COO of talent management powerhouse Primary Violator. Some US media reports have suggested that Lighty committed suicide.

Lighty was born in New York, and first made connections in the city’s emerging hip hop scene by helping out the likes of DJ Red Alert and KRS-One, at one time simply carrying records for the former. Once established in the scene, Lighty became manager for several prominent rap groups of the mid-80s, including Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.

His talents were spotted by early hip hop moguls Russell Simmons and Lyor Cohen, who recruited him to work for their Rush Management business in 1989. He brought the acts he already represented to the company, while also subsequently working with Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Big Daddy Kane and Eric B & Rakim, among many others. During this time he also occasionally rapped himself.

He founded his company Violator while still working for Rush, and when the latter closed in the mid-1990s several of its clients moved over to Lighty’s agency, which had become the primary project for both him and business partner Mona Scott-Young.

Violator grew into one of US hip hop’s most important management firms, with spin-off divisions focusing on brand partnerships, digital projects and record releases. Missy Elliott, Mobb Deep, LL Cool J and, perhaps most notably, 50 Cent joined the roster of acts Violator represented. Meanwhile, through various major label alliances, Lighty also personally held executive roles at the likes of Jive, Def Jam and Loud Records.

Last September, Lighty announced a major new alliance with another big US talent management company, Primary Wave, a deal which created Primary Violator. Light was appointed COO of the new venture, working alongside Primary Wave execs Larry Mestel and Michael ‘Blue’ Williams. Light said at the time: “I am excited to launch Primary Violator with two of the most talented and respected executives in the industry. The music business is all about innovation and this strategic partnership will create a more diversified company, which will bring forth a wealth of opportunities for our clients”.

After Lighty’s death was confirmed yesterday, Mestel said in a statement: “We are extremely shocked and saddened by this tragic news. Chris was a friend, business partner and most of all, an icon, role model and true legend of the music and entertainment industry. He will be missed by many, and we send love and support to his family”.

The New York Daily News has reported that Lighty died from a seemingly self-inflicted gunshot wound, possibly following an argument with his ex-wife. Various media have noted that recent remarks by the executive on Twitter were philosophical and downhearted, while the Daily News reckons the Violator chief was facing problems over unpaid taxes. Though there has, as yet, been no formal announcement regarding the circumstances around Lighty’s death.

Universal Publishing signs admin deal with Billy Joel

Business News Deals Labels & Publishers

Billy Joel

Universal Music Publishing has announced a new global publishing alliance with Billy Joel via its Rondor Music division, with the major administering all of Joel’s songs on a worldwide basis.

Universal Music Publishing top man Zach Horowitz told CMU: “We couldn’t be more thrilled that Billy Joel has chosen to bring his songs to Rondor and UMPG. There are few songwriters in the history of music that have created a catalogue of such hits, depth and quality. With Rondor’s distinctive focus and care, and UMPG’s global scale, administrative infrastructure and network of worldwide sync specialists, we are uniquely positioned to maximise the extraordinary opportunities that exist for Billy’s music”.

Joel himself, meanwhile, said: “Publishing is a cornerstone of the music business, one of the reasons songs live and thrive around the world years after they’ve been written or recorded. Rondor and Universal Music Publishing Group understand the complexities of music publishing in general and the nuances of my catalogue in particular. The successful ongoing administration of my songs is in good hands under the stewardship of Rondor and UMPG”.

Placebo confirm licensing deal with Universal

Business News Deals Labels & Publishers

Placebo

Placebo have announced a new licensing deal with Universal Music, via the mega-major’s German business for some reason.

Placebo self-released their last album after completing their original record deal with EMI, working with independents Vagrant and [PIAS] on distribution. The new partnership with Universal will also see the major represent the band’s entire “physical back catalogue”. The first new release under the new alliance will be an EP later this year, followed by a new longer player in 2013.

Confirming the deal, Tom Bohne, Senior Vice President of Universal Music Germany, told CMU: “We’re thrilled that Brian, Stefan and Steve have chosen to sign with Universal Music Germany for a worldwide deal and we look forward to engaging with their loyal fan base as well as reaching new audiences through the release of their next album and special editions of their back catalogue. We firmly believe that Placebo will continue creating music that pushes the limits artistically and commercially and are happy they entrust us with their art”.

Alex Weston from the band’s management Riverman added: “Placebo’s last album campaign, which we were happy with, had us, as management and label, juggling various licensing deals with independents all over the world. Whilst it allowed us enormous freedom and control and resulted in a continued level of success which we are incredibly proud of, the work load was astronomical and actually made us appreciate what a major label can bring to the party. We were very fortunate to have a lot of interest from some great labels and it was a complex negotiation getting to this point”.

He added: “We’ve been incredibly impressed with the Universal teams we’ve so far met in London, France and various key territories, and we’re delighted to be doing a deal through our German friends who we’ve known for many years and who have shown enormous enthusiasm for Placebo. Through them, we know the band will get the attention, commitment and worldwide reach we require for the next phase in Placebo’s career”.

King Cannibal becomes House Of Black Lanterns

Artist News

House Of Black Lanterns

Dylan Richards, who has previously released music under the names of King Cannibal and Zilla for labels including Ninja Tune and Warp, has announced a new project, House Of Black Lanterns.

The new venture sees Richards move further away from the drum n bass and dubstep realms he’s previously inhabited, though he very much retains the distinct dark and foreboding atmosphere which all of his productions are swathed in. The new project will also have a visual element to it.

Says Richards: “House Of Black Lanterns is firstly about suspense, space and depth. More restrained than anything I have worked on before, the threat of violence is buried in deep texture rather than worn of my sleeve. Space is important to this project, both in terms of the space within these productions and the creative space. House Of Black Lanterns will be an evolving experiment bringing in shifting contributors. I’m excited to share the birth of this project, as it has been my primary focus for the last year and is my sole priority”.

King Cannibal will remain a going concern as a live act – his next show a performance with the Kronos Quartet at the Sacrum Profanum festival in Poland next month – though Richards says he has no further plans to record under that name. But then, when you’ve submitted one of the best tracks to Björk’s massive ‘Biophilia’ remix project, you might as well stop there, eh?

The debut House Of Black Lanterns album is planned for release early next year via Jon Convex’s Convex Industries record company, while Richards has also launched his own label, Shock & Desire, for other unreleased material. A single through that label is expected later this year.

You can hear a whole load of House Of Black Lanterns material, plus that aforementioned Björk rework in this mix, which Richards has put together for The Quietus. You can also download it to keep forever and ever right here.

Blink 182 recording again

Artist News

Blin 182

Mark Hoppus has been recording for a new Blink 182 project. Updating fans via his Google+ profile (I know, seriously), the Blink bassist wrote this week “it begins…”, enclosing a screen-print of an untitled audio file in studio software Logic.

When questioned as to what exactly had begun, Hoppus added: “Sorry, not trying to be mysterious. Yes, this is me opening a new file for a Blink 182 song. I had three ideas today, all very different. I wish I knew how to operate Logic better. These guitar tracks sound like Frankenstein’s monster singing dubstep”.

So there you have it, Blink 182 are releasing a Halloween-themed dubstep LP, you heard it here first.

One Direction share LP artwork, release date

Releases

One Direction

Having yesterday enticed fans with just the title of their new LP, ‘Take Me Home’, One Direction have shared several extra details relating to it. And oh my gosh, are they essential.

The 1D quintet presented said essential details via a very well-rehearsed yet casual video message, confirming that the new record will be available to pre-order from 3 Sep “at midnight”. The actual release date, if you’d rather know that, is 12 Nov.

They also tweeted this photo of the ‘Take Me Home’ cover art. If ever an image of five teenage boys doing things near a phone box spoke a thousand words, it’s this one. I could look at it for hours.

50th anniversary Rolling Stones film to have cinema screenings

Artist News

The Rolling Stones

With that 50th anniversary now upon us (actually, I think technically it passed last month), a film documenting The Rolling Stones’ five decade career is set for release across selected cinemas in October.

Titled ‘Crossfire Hurricane’, it features thus far unseen archival footage and new commentary by the band, presenting – or so says its press spiel – “a remarkable new perspective on the Stones’ unparalleled journey from blues-obsessed teenagers in the early 60s to rock royalty”.

The film’s director Brett Morgen says: “This is not an academic history lesson. ‘Crossfire Hurricane’ allows the viewer to experience the Stones’ journey from a unique vantage point. It’s an aural and visual rollercoaster ride”.

‘Crossfire Hurricane’ will also be screened, rock n roll rollercoaster clichés and all, on BBC Two later this year, and will be available on DVD in November.

Meanwhile, speculation is rife that four 50th anniversary concerts will also take place this autumn, with some saying Richard Branson will use the flagship shows to launch a new live music enterprise. As previously reported, all four current members of the Stones were recently working together in a Parisian studio, possibly created bonus material content for an upcoming compilation.

Despite leaving a Pendulum-shaped void in the drum n bass scene when they confirmed an indefinite hiatus as a performing and recording outfit in June, Pendulum do still exist, but in the more modest form of a DJ duo who occasionally take to the decks for the time being.

And one such occurrence is taking place at London’s Koko on 8 Sep, as promoter The Playground presents a night also featuring Hadouken, +Zedd, and Bassnectar’s live British debut.

“Exhausted” Azealia Banks cancels further festival sets

Artist News Gigs & Festivals

Azealia Banks

Having cancelled multiple live appearances back in April, Azealia Banks – who’s so far earned a pretty erratic reputation as far as keeping promises is concerned – has at the last minute also withdrawn from two further festivals, citing “exhaustion”.

The rapper has opted out of Ireland’s Electric Picnic, having already withdrawn from Ibiza Rocks earlier this week. Though to her credit, she did perform at the latter’s sister event, Mallorca Rocks, on Tuesday. Organisers of this year’s The Cure-headlined Electric Picnic, which takes place this weekend in County Laois, have issued this statement confirming Banks as a no-show: “Following on from reports earlier announcing that Azealia Banks cancelled her performance at Ibiza Rocks, we can confirm she also has pulled out of Electric Picnic 2012 due to exhaustion. We wish her a speedy recovery!”

Ah that’s a nice get well soon message, isn’t it? Maybe it’ll remind Banks that she’s meant to be off work sick at the moment. Because with all the champagne, wine and other “strong drinks” she’s been imbibing on her all-expenses-paid Spanish minibreak, she seems to have forgotten.

Werner Herzog to direct live Killers webcast for AMEX

Brands & Merch

The Killers

The same scheme responsible for one-off collaborations between Jack White and Gary Oldman, Duran Duran and David Lynch, and Hamish Hamilton and Usher, American Express’s Unstaged series, has now persuaded German film auteur Werner Herzog to direct a concert webcast featuring The Killers. And potentially a surprise animal.

The set will be screened live from New York’s Paradise Theatre on 18 Sep (via this YouTube link), which is also the day The Killers release their new LP ‘Battle Born’ in the US. We’ll have it a day earlier, of course.

Rolling Stone quotes the band’s bassist, Mark Stoermer, as speculating thus: “He [Herzog] has ideas for someone crowd surfing with a camera on. [And] he’s gonna put cameras on Ronnie while he’s playing drums”.

He adds: “I think there’s gonna be an animal involved. [But] I’m sure it will all be done the right way”.

Guy Garvey setting up EP label

Business News Labels & Publishers

Guy Garvey

Elbow’s Guy Garvey has set himself up as an ambassador for the Extended Play sound recording format, and why not – I mean more bands are releasing EPs now than ever before, and if you are going to be ambassador of anything, you might as well pick something already doing well.

Though Garvey is interested in bands treating their EPs as a proper piece of work, and then releasing them on good old vinyl, and he’s collaborating with Fiction Records boss Jim Chancellor to set up a little label to help artists do just that.

Or at least that’s what he’s told Radio 4. He said this week: “We don’t want disposable songs [on our EPs] – we want a 20 minute record”, adding: “Young bands that are perhaps self-financing and have to make money through touring can release three EPs rather than one album. That’s three times as much excuse to tour, so it’s working commercially”.

CMU Beef Of The Week #125: Brian May v badger hater David Cameron

And Finally Artist News Beef Of The Week

Brian May

Brian May has called on the government to cancel a planned badger cull in Gloucestershire and Somerset. Or rather, he has called on people (specifically Daily Mail readers, but whatever) to call on the government to stop it. Because, says May, “David Cameron leads a new generation of Tories hell-bent on bringing back bloodsports … There is nobody in our government who represents the interests of wild animals”. And one rockstar alone isn’t going to be able to change their mind.

In an opinion piece for the Mail, May said: “In probably less than a month’s time, Cameron’s government plans to start killing thousands of badgers, a protected species, in ‘pilot’ culls in Gloucestershire and Somerset. The lucky ones will die quickly. Others, targeted by high-powered rifles on night shoots, will be maimed or wounded to crawl away to a slow, painful death”.

He continued: “Badgers matter. They are a key species, an intrinsic element in our delicate ecosystem. Their removal would have as yet poorly understood consequences for other species such as hares, foxes and hedgehogs … They are also highly intelligent, sentient creatures. So why the cull? It is being pursued on the pretext of ‘doing something’ about the problem of bovine TB. Yet that ‘something’ is immoral, demonstrably unjustifiable by science, and will ultimately cost the farmer, and you – the taxpayer – a fortune”.

Brian knows his audience, clearly. Animal cruelty might not interest Daily Mail readers, but the possibility of their hard earned taxes going astray will.

The National Farmers Union – an organisation which May says in his article “admits killing badgers on this scale will not solve the problem” – has objected to May’s comments. Ian Johnson, spokesman for the NFU in the South West told This Is Cornwall: “This is not political – this is an animal welfare issue and he should not be politicising the problem. Brian May is a well-intentioned, very rich misguided person. If he wants to get involved in animal welfare he should be getting involved with the scourge of TB that affects not just cattle but other species too. His comments do nothing to help a rational debate about the problem … He’s obviously a very intelligent man so I can’t understand why he’s involving himself with issues he does not understand”.

According to Farmers Weekly, the Badgers Trust has been granted the right to appeal against the culls at a hearing next month, which will delay the culls at least until later this year.

Badgers Trust spokeman Jack Reedy said: “The court will look at the evidence and the judge will decide whether to uphold the decision to cull badgers or not. We will abide by whatever they say, but consider the terms [of the decision] if we need to”.

New report upbeat about digital music future

Digital Top Stories

Ovum

The global digital music market will grow about 15% a year in the next half decade, so that it’s worth $22.5 billion by 2017. So that’s a nice stat to start the day with, isn’t it? Even if it comes with the proviso that most of this growth will take place outside of Europe and North America.

This is the lead stat in a new research report from Informa-owned analyst firm Ovum. It reckons that subscription-based music services, and especially those bundled in with mobile packages, will play the most important role in that growth – and it’s because mobile music revenues could actually fall in the US and Europe, Ovum reckons, that the outlook is less good in those territories.

But in traditionally smaller markets, where piracy may well have hit both CD and conventional download revenues in the past, the bundling of subscription services with mobile packages – something some experts have long said is where the real potential of digital music lies – will lead the digital music boom between now and 2017, Ovum reckons.

The company’s Mark Little told CMU: “In Asia Pacific, growth created by consumers migrating to subscription services such as Lismo Unlimited from KKBOX in Japan will result in a regional CAGR [Compound Annual Growth Rate] of 44%. With Spotify landing in the US, joining Rhapsody, Sony Music Unlimited, Rdio and MOG, such brands are helping reinvigorate on-demand subscriptions, and we estimate a 40% CAGR over the forecast period”.

He added: “We expect the main driver of digital music in the forecast period to be subscriptions, because it is a format that can be easily bundled by service providers, as well as offered directly, resulting in increased penetration of subscriptions around the world”.

Ovum’s upbeat (overall) predictions, follow a report last week by German music association BVMI that said that the digital music market was finally gaining momentum there too. Digital services have been slower to take off in the world’s third largest music market than in many other Western countries, in part because collecting society GEMA has been slow to licence non-download based platforms.

But, according to the new BVMI report, 22.1 million Germans consumed digital music in 2011, and while digital still accounts for less than 17% of recorded music revenues overall in Germany, digital income was up 21.2% last year, as music fans started to embrace the 70 legal download and streaming services now available in the country.

Though, despite the glimmers of hope within, you sense that the report, which was co-published by the German book industry and the German Federation Against Copyright Theft, was really designed to put new pressure of politicians in the country, who have generally been less keen than their counterparts in the UK and France to introduce new measures for combating online piracy (even if the UK measures haven’t really be enacted, and the French measures may well be curtailed later this year).

The survey claimed that 75% of the Germans it polled reckoned it was appropriate to fine people who offer copyright content online without permission, while over 50% endorsed fines for the people who then download content from illegitimate websites.

Frank Briegmann, President of Universal Music Deutschland and a member of the BVMI board, told reporters: “The growth of the digital market is something we are very happy about. It just about compensates for the decline in the physical market. [But] in order to achieve a long term reversal of this trend and to return to positive growth, rigorous action against copyright violators is needed. That is the only way artists will be paid fairly for the use of their work in the future”.

MegaUpload founder given access to cash

Digital Legal MegaUpload Timeline

Kim Schmitz

New Zealand’s High Court has green lighted a proposal to provide MegaUpload and its founder Kim ‘Dotcom’ Schmitz with access to cash to cover ongoing legal expenses, and to help Dotcom meet the rent payments on his million dollar a year rented mansion.

As much previously reported, assets held by the controversial file-transfer website and its founder were frozen in January, when the US authorities shut down the MegaUpload servers and, at the request of the Americans, police in New Zealand arrested four executives linked to the Hong Kong incorporated digital company. The US is currently trying to extradite those executives to face charges of copyright infringement, money laundering and racketeering.

The lack of funds to pay rapidly mounting legal fees has been a bugbear of Dotcom and his team since day one, and they have been pushing the New Zealand courts to release monies, arguing that without access to cash the defence is at a significant disadvantage. And on Wednesday, despite opposition from US and New Zealand prosecutors, the country’s High Court conceded, by allowing Team Mega to take out a NZ$6 million loan secured against frozen assets. Dotcom himself will also be allowed to sell some of his infamous fleet of cars.

The MegaUpload team had asked for $8 million, of which $2.7 million would go on past legal fees, $2.5 million on future legal costs, and $2 million would be used to pay past and future rent bills (Dotcom having taken out a loan to make a February rent payment, and then negotiated a postponement on the next rent bill).

Although the original plan was for the US’s extradition case to be heard in August, that won’t now take place until next March. However, an ongoing squabble over the warrant used to raid Dotcom’s mansion in January, and what should happen to assets seized given the wrong warrant was seemingly used, should return to court next month, with the prosecution looking to overturn a previous court ruling in the defence’s favour on that issue.

Dotcom, meanwhile, is investing much of his energies into trying to get the Megabox direct-to-fan platform, that he had been developing before the January shutdown, up and running, while routinely telling the world via Twitter how he and his future Mega ventures will single-handedly empower artists, and change the entertainment industry, and possibly the world, forever. Even though his own musical offerings arguably remind us why the A&R filtering process of the old school record industry isn’t always a bad thing.

LL Cool J burglar pleads not guilty

Legal

LL Cool J

The man accused of burgling rapper LL Cool J’s home earlier this month entered a not guilty plea at an LA court on Tuesday, Reuters reports.

As previously reported, LL Cool J discovered the man, named as Jonathan Kirby, in his kitchen at around 1am last Wednesday morning. He tackled the intruder and detained him while his daughter called the police – breaking Birby’s jaw, nose and some ribs in the process.

Due to California’s “three-strikes” law, Kirby faces a sentence of 38 years to life if found guilty, as it would be his third conviction in the state. He will now be held in jail until another hearing on 10 Sep to decide if there is enough evidence to take the case to trial.

Will.i.am signs with BMG, records Martian single

Business News Deals Labels & Publishers

Will.i.am

Auto-tuned hip-pop astronaut Will.i.am has a brand new international publishing partnership with rights management company BMG.

The company will now manage the publishing copyrights created by the Black Eyed genius. “Genius?” you query. Well, BMG’s Venus Brown certainly thinks so, enthusing: “The word ‘genius’ gets thrown around a bit too much these days, but in the case of Will.i.am it’s undeniably true. Will.i.am’s range, cleverness and global appeal as a songwriter/producer are just a part of what makes him special and I’m so grateful that he has chosen BMG as his partner and home for his works”.

One such ‘work’ is a new project i.am has undertaken with NASA, whereby he has created a track to be broadcast from Mars via the Curiosity rover-bot gadget. Bearing the aptly astral title ‘Reach For The Stars’, it’s described as “a new composition about the singer’s passion for science, technology and space exploration”.

The track’s official Martian premiere, beamed live to earth from Curiosity, took place on Tuesday. Listen to an Earthly excerpt here.

Paralympics opening ceremony soundtrack released

Releases

London Paralympics 2012

While it’s still not clear to me why the Paralympics needs to be its own separate event (and I sometimes worry about the message sent out by it being so), those that recently discovered that they quite like watching sport on the telly when the “mainstream media should only cover two sports at any one time” rule is dropped will presumably be pleased that a second round of sporting delights is winging its way to their telly screens. Even if this time it comes with adverts.

And making Paralympians compete at a separate parallel Olympics does mean we get a second opening ceremony, and Universal therefore gets to release another Olympics-themed record. And while last night’s Paralympics opening ceremony might not have been the wondrous mindfuck Danny Boyle delivered at the start of the main event, many of you may still wish to remember the proceedings with a copy of the musical score, which went on sale last night, and features the following musical moments…

London Symphony Orchestra – Prologue
London Symphony Orchestra – Jasmine’s Theme
Various Choirs – Principia
London Symphony Orchestra – Spirit In Motion
London Symphony Orchestra – Declaration Of The Games
London Symphony Orchestra – Paralympic Anthem
London Symphony Orchestra – Brave New World
London Symphony Orchestra – Handel: Eternal Source Of Light Divine
London Symphony Orchestra – Navigation
London Symphony Orchestra – Storm
London Symphony Orchestra – Gravity
London Symphony Orchestra – Masque

One Direction

One Direction are beseeching all ladies, great grannies and teen girlfans across the known universe to ‘Take Me Home’, having just confirmed that that will be the title of their sophomore LP.

The band’s Louis Tomlinson was first to spill the exclusive for the eyes of his Twitter disciples only, tweeting: “So pleased to tell you that our new album is called ‘Take Me Home’, can’t wait for you to hear it! More news soooon!”

Ooooh, I for one am excited.

As you may know, Louis, curly Harry Styles and the other 1D boys have chosen ‘Live While You’re Young’ as the first single to be taken from their new long player. So far crowned the fastest selling pre-order single ever; it’ll be available to buy, download and swoon over from 30 Sep.

Pure Love, MellowHype postpone LPs

Releases

MellowHype

Ah, music stars and their flexible LP campaigns. First Azealia Banks and A$AP Rocky re-set the dates by which fans will be able to buy their debut long players, and now Pure Love and MellowHype are at it. I despair sometimes, I really do.

First to Frank Carter’s post-Gallows reincarnation Pure Love, who have postponed the release of their first LP, ‘Anthems’, by six months. It’ll now be out on 4 Feb, and they haven’t even bothered to explain why. If you forgive this and are still interested in all-things Pure Love, the band begin a headline tour at the Exeter Cavern on 25 Oct.

Rap duo MellowHype, aka Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats and Left Brain, have blamed a delay in releasing their new record, ‘Numbers’, on their own sense of artistic perfectionism, setting its issue date back by a week to 8 Oct. Hodgy shared the revised date via Twitter, adding in a since-deleted tweet: “My album is great but it wasn’t intact. I’m on tour getting these masters right. I won’t settle and put out music I’m unsatisfied with”.

Beats also published an official tracklisting by way of compensation, and this is it:

Grill
65/Breakfast
Astro
NDJKHSIF
La Bonita
Beat
Snare
Untitled L
LeFlair
Monster
666
P2
GNC
Brain
Under 2
Break

But while delayed the album as a whole might be, MellowHype have just released the video for lead ‘Numbers’ single ‘La Bonita’, look:
