Single Review: Amy Studt – Nice Boys (19)

By | Published on Monday 2 March 2009

Amy Studt

Like Siobhan Donaghy before her, British singer-songwriter popstress Amy Studt is ditching the gloss-covered precision of her earlier work to concentrate on producing music that comes from a place closer to her own heart. Alternative and contemporary, ‘Nice Boys’ sways back and forth between dark modern piano pop of the Tori Amos variety and the kind of angst-ridden, Doc-Marten stomping femme-rock-pop bands like Alisha’s Attic were so famous for ten years ago. As with the Donaghy-effect, Amy will appeal to many, but perhaps may fail to reach out wide enough to garner a solid audience. Like the girl herself, Amy’s new material is pretty, novel and fresh, but sadly, and quoting her own song here, ‘nice boys [or, in this case, girls] – they don’t last’. TW
