Approved: Nicolas Bougaïeff
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 28 May 2020
Nicolas Bougaïeff is set to release his latest album, ‘The Upward Spiral’, in July. As the title hints at, it is an often dizzying exploration of positive and negative energy. An album of grey areas. Opening track ‘Embrace Hope All Ye Who Enter Here’ sets the tone for its equal parts punishing and euphoric industrial techno sound.
The first single from the record is ‘Thalassophobia’, about which Bougaïeff says: “It’s about looking inwards. It’s a Greek word that means fear of depth, actually literally it’s fear of water, but it’s the fear of unfathomable depths. I’m pointing to the fear of depths; both literal and metaphorical. It’s a beautiful word that has attracted me going back years”.
It’s an appropriate metaphor for the album as a whole as well, which reveals incredible sonic depths the further you allow yourself to fall into it.
‘The Upward Spiral’ – Bougaïeff’s first release through Mute – is out on 24 Jul. Watch the video for ‘Thalassophobia’ here:
