Approved: Peelander-Z
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 9 February 2010
Describing their sound as “Japanese action comic punk”, Japanese action comic punk band Peelander-Z formed in New York in 1998, all having moved to the city from Japan. Coincidentally, they were all born in the Z area of Planet Peelander, too. I know, you couldn’t make it up, could you?
The band are known for their unusual live performances, which sees bassist Peelander-Red dress in an octopus costume, and drummer Peelander-Green play while hanging upside down from the ceiling. Skipping and “human bowling” may also be involved. You can find all this out for yourself when the band descend on the UK for a tour in May. While you wait, you should familiarise yourself with their latest album, ‘P-Pop-High School’, which was released last September. But right now, let’s get things rolling with the video for ‘So Many Mike’, a song about living in a country where a lot of people are called Mike.
