And Finally Beef Of The Week

CMU Beef Of The Week #58: Dave Grohl v Glee

Dave Grohl

Dave Grohl is generally considered to be the nicest man in rock. It takes a lot to get him riled. So, well done Ryan Murphy, you are one of the chosen few.

This incident actually revisits a previous Beef Of The Week, when ‘Glee’ creator Murphy called out various rock stars who decided they didn’t want their music included in the show, saying: “Usually I find that people who make those comments, their careers are over; they’re uneducated and quite stupid”.

When Kings Of Leon drummer Nathan Followill said they’d turned down the opportunity to be in the show (having been near the end of a lengthy tour and not really knowing what the show was), Murphy ranted: “Fuck you, Kings Of Leon. They’re self-centred assholes and they missed the big picture. They missed that a seven year old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings Of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of ‘Glee’ all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music”.

It could be, perhaps, just maybe, that if Murphy wants to find someone self-centred who has missed the big picture, he should look a little closer to home. Grohl certainly thinks so, taking great exception to Murphy’s arrogance.

The chief Foo Fighter told the Hollywood Reporter that he’d also turned down that chance to have his music featured in the show, saying: “You shouldn’t have to do fucking ‘Glee’. And then the guy who created ‘Glee’ is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his fucking show… I watched ten minutes [of it]. It’s not my thing”.

Referencing Murphy’s response to past critics, Grohl continued: “Slash was the first one. [Murphy] wanted to do Guns N Roses, and Slash is like, ‘I hate fucking musicals. It’s worse than ‘Grease’. Then [Murphy’s] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that. He’s a washed-up old rock star. That’s what they fucking do’. And then Kings Of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show’. And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little assholes…’ And it’s just like, ‘Dude, maybe not everyone loves ‘Glee’. Me included'”.

So far, Murphy has not responded to this. Instead, he’s been banging on about Gwyneth Paltrow, who will return to the show for her third episode next season, saying: “Gwyneth is sort of the muse of the show. She’s somebody who I write [to] on the weekends and say: ‘What do you think about this for an episode even if you’re not in it?’ She has opinions. She’s great”.

Last time Paltrow appeared on the show, she sang Gary Glitter’s ‘Do You Wanna Touch Me?’, and Murphy also confirm this week that in the new series another of the show’s characters will sing an original song called ‘It’s 10am, I’m Drunk’.

So, that’s a song originally performed by a convicted paedophile and another about drinking to excess before lunch. Great work enriching the lives of all those seven year olds, dude.
