CMU Insights at Pivotal

Birmingham’s Pivotal music conference is getting closer and more details have been announced about what will be happening in CMU House, where the CMU Insights team are presenting a whole day of briefings, workshops and discussions.
In the afternoon the focus will be on data. CMU’s Chris Cooke will present a speed briefing on the ‘Fan Data Guide’ he compiled for the Music Managers Forum earlier this year.
That will be followed by two workshops led by CMU’s Sam Taylor, the first providing practical advice on how to gather and utilise all that data. The second putting the spotlight on social media and how data can increase the impact of those channels.
The workshops will also include interviews with Music Glue’s Will Spencer and Green House Group’s Alex Thomson. Both of whom will then also take part in a panel discussion on ‘Building A Direct-To-Fan Business’, alongside Jessie Scoullar from Wicksteed Works and Tamsin Sharp from Believe UK.
In the morning we put the spotlight on CMU’s Pathways Into Music research, which is mapping music careers, music education and local music industries. CMU’s Chris Cooke and Phil Nelson will provide an overview of this work to date, and then discuss the importance of local music industry networks, and how the local industry is connected in Birmingham.
Alongside all the sessions in CMU House, over at AWAL x FAC House there will an Artist:Entrepreneur Day, the artist-to-artist education programme from the FAC and CMU:DIY. Hosted by artist entrepreneurs Emma McGann, Eckoes and ShaoDow, the five A:E Day sessions will look at how artists generate revenue, organise their rights, get gigs, build a fanbase and choose which business partners to work with.
