Reeperbahn Festival

The Reeperbahn Festival kicks off in Hamburg today and, over the next four days, hundreds of bands will play in venues on, around and near the city’s Reeperbahn, with both punters and industry in the audience.

During the day, of course, there is also the conference for industry delegates, with a wide range of panels, presentations and networking events taking place. As part of that programme, CMU Insights presents three sessions at East Hotel on Friday afternoon.

The first session (at 1pm) is focused on the most recent phase of the Music Managers Forum’s ‘Dissecting The Digital Dollar’ project, putting the spotlight on song royalties.

CMU’s Chris Cooke will provide a speed briefing explaining exactly how songwriters get paid by streaming services, and the complexities in the system that can delay, reduce or halt payments. He will then discuss what songwriters and their managers can do to reduce the negative impact of the complex network of royalty chains with Craft Management’s Ray Black, Songtrust’s Mandy Aubry and MMF’s Annabella Coldrick.

The next session at 2.15pm very much follows on. Organised by copyright hub ICE and led by CMU’s Chris Cooke, it considers the technology solutions already being employed by collecting societies and publishers to address some of the issues raised in the Digital Dollar ‘Song Royalties Guide’. Joining that conversation will be Lucilla Green from Do The Rights Thing, Lina Heyman from STIM and Neil Jones from ICE.

The final CMU session shifts over to the ever-evolving world of music marketing. CMU’s Sam Taylor will discuss how album marketing has changed with Alex Thomson from Green House Group and Malena Wolfer from Believe.

You will find more information about all these sessions here. Meanwhile to check out the full conference and festival schedules, get on over to the main Reeperbahn website here.
