Ferrari wins double at Commercial Radio Awards

By | Published on Friday 18 June 2010

LBC presenter Nick Ferrari, who missed out on all the top prizes at this year’s Sonys, despite having five nominations, won two of the big gongs at the UK’s other radio awards bash yesterday, the Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards. As the name suggests, these are the awards that cut out the BBC (and those stations, like TalkSport, currently boycotting organisers RadioCentre) and go solely to radio types working in the commercial sector.

Ferrari took the Best Breakfast Show prize as well as the flagship Arqiva Gold gong at a slick bash in the basement of the new Westminster Bridge Park Plaza Hotel in London last night. Referencing his disappointments at this year’s Sony Awards, he thanked the commercial radio sector for recognising his achievements.

In terms of companies, Bauer Radio took the most awards, getting five in total. Absolute Radio boss man Clive Dickins took Programmer Of The Year, while the Lifetime Achievement Award went to long-time leader of Independent Radio News, John Perkins, who retired last year. The Chairman’s Award for outstanding contribution went to Lisa Kerr for her lobbying efforts on behalf of the radio industry, initially as an employee of RadioCentre, and more recently with Digital Radio UK.

The most heart-warming award of the night was undoubtedly the one handed to former BBC presenter Ali Booker, who returned to radio at Oxfordshire’s Jack FM in 2008 despite suffering from inoperable cancer. She was presented with the Special Programme Of The Year prize for a series of programmes about her illness. Although not well enough to attend the London bash, she sent in a video message to thank the award judges and her colleagues at Jack.

Commenting on this year’s awards, RadioCentre boss Andrew Harrison told reporters: “The Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards are a testament to the incredible hard work that our stations commit to producing the very best content for listeners across the country. With the standard of entrants higher than ever, and the introduction of new awards, they are a true reflection of the terrific service the commercial radio sector delivers”.
