Guvera to launch in the US
By Andy Malt | Published on Wednesday 9 December 2015
Australian digital firm Guvera has announced plans to expand its ad-funded streaming service into the US. Though these particular plans apparently don’t involve buying up an existing service, then closing it down and scarpering.
The company, which dabbled in the US market in an earlier incarnation, announced plans to launch its current service Stateside with a launch party in LA earlier this week. The evening included performances by Swimm and Jessie J. What a night it sounds like.
Said the company’s CEO Darren Herft ahead of that bash: “Our West Coast Launch Party at the House of Guvera is going to be an absolute blast. But more important[ly], the event will be an opportunity to highlight Guvera’s brand-funded streaming model, dedication to music lovers everywhere, and mission to bring fans, brands and musicians together in a way that transforms the way we experience music”.
Back in the UK, Guvera is still facing a class action from former employees of Blinkbox – which is what I was referring to with that whole buy/close/scarper thing. They argue that Guvera managed to run Blinkbox into the ground in just five months after acquiring the service from Tesco at the start of the year, and then failed to meet obligations to staff when the service was suddenly shut down in June.
More recently, Guvera raised new financing of AUS$100 million and discussed plans for an IPO.
