LadBaby score record breaking fifth Christmas number one

LadBaby’s latest charity single is this year’s UK Christmas number one, meaning the YouTubers have now occupied the festive top spot for five years running. And they’ve also scored more Christmas number ones than any other artist, breaking a record previously held by The Beatles, who topped the festive chart in 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1967.
This year LadBaby – aka Mark and Roxanne Hoyle – joined up with money-saving expert Martin Lewis to release a cover of Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ As with their previous releases, food bank charity The Trussell Trust is a beneficiary of the charity record, though this year the Band Aid Trust will also get some of the money generated by the release.
Commenting on their latest chart achievement, Mark Doyle says: “I can’t quite believe it! We’re number one! The charity has made it five years in a row. How have we done this again? A massive apology to The Beatles – and to all The Beatles’ fans… I’m sorry! The charity wins. The Trussell Trust gets Christmas number one again!”
Official Charts Company boss Martin Talbot adds: “It only seems yesterday that LadBaby turned up with their first festive campaign four years ago, so it feels slightly surreal to be sending hearty congratulations on their fifth successive official Christmas number one. Securing one Christmas number one is a huge achievement in itself – to do it five times, in successive years, is unprecedented and frankly incredible”.
“The success of Mark, Roxanne and their family is more than just a chart feat too”, he goes on. “The work they have done to raise profile and funds for food banks generally and The Trussell Trust in particular has been immense over the past five years, especially at a time which continues to be so difficult for so many people in the UK”.
Another new fundraising festive track in the race this year finishes at number three in the final chart, despite it being released at the start of the month and appearing at number 41 on last week’s chart. That’s ‘Christmas Drillings’ from supergroup Sidemen, featuring JME, which is raising money for food poverty charity FareShare.
The rest of the Christmas top five is made up of old festive tracks, with Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ at number two and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ at number four. Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s not quite so old ‘Merry Christmas’ is at number five.
The other Christmas number one contender we were watching closely this year was the latest sweary political song from The Kunts, whose latest release is called ‘Fuck The Tories’. It finishes the chart week at number seven, slightly below the number five ranking achieved by their track last year – ‘Boris Johnson Is Still A Fucking Cunt’ – although this year the race for the Christmas chart was definitely more competitive.
