The family of Natalie Cole have expressed disappointment at the brevity of the Grammy Awards’ tribute to the singer on Monday night. Cole, who died in December, was only mentioned as part of a short video montage of artists who have died in the last year, rather than being given a standalone tribute as David Bowie, Lemmy, BB King and Eagles’ Glenn Frey were.

“Sadly a FORGETTABLE tribute to Natalie Cole”, the singer’s sisters, Timolin and Casey, told Entertainment Tonight. “Words cannot express the outrage and utter disappointment at the disrespectful tribute, or lack thereof, to a legendary artist such as our sister”.

Cole’s son Robert Adam Yancy added: “Here is a woman who has been in the business for four decades, had 21 Grammy nominations and won nine Grammys. She deserves more than [to be a part of] a minute and a half tribute. It was shameless the way they minimised her legacy. [But] we will find solace in her legacy as well as her endless fans around the world”.

The singer’s first Grammy Award was for Best New Artist in 1975, making her the first African-American to win the category. In 1991 she took home six awards for ‘Unforgettable… With Love’ – an album of songs for which her father Nat King Cole was known – including Album Of The Year.
