A new season of five CMU Insights courses kicks off this week. The five half-day sessions, which work as standalone or one complete course, are led by CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke, who says “in an industry that is changing all the time, and with 2013 getting ever closer to its conclusion, why not start 2014 fully up to speed on the latest trends, developments, challenges and opportunities in the business of music? These courses provide a great overview for both beginners and experienced music industry professionals”.

The five courses look at:

• The various ways to monetise music, and the music companies that specialise in each area.

• How copyright and licensing work, including a beginners guide to collective licensing and the collecting societies.

• The music rights sector, and trends in digital, physical and sync.

• The state of the music media, and developments in social media, and how both can be used to promote artists and releases.

• The growth of direct-to-fan, and the new kinds of deals artists are doing with their key business partners.
