Live Review: Outhouse at London Jazz Festival on 20 Nov

From the moment they came out, it was clear these guys had no interest in playing music with cohesion or structure, and at no point did they attempt to infuse a philosophy to their sound that might help explain their approach. The noise was archaic, disjointed and based on very introspective, personal life experiences: one song was called ‘What Are We Doing In The Kitchen In The Middle Of The Night?’ Their performance was the result of people with dexterity on their instruments following any path that occurred to them without consideration of form or rhythm. The bigger achievement, though, was in showing how oddly compelling it is to see a bunch of young people making sounds on stage in a confident way, even if they totally disregard any musical aesthetic and what they produce is unpleasant to listen to and difficult to bear.
