CMU Playlists

Playlist: Friends

By | Published on Thursday 12 July 2012

Having smashed their way into the room (‘the room’ being the consciousnesses of lots of people) with their second single ‘I’m His Girl’ last year, leading to them becoming the only indie label-signed band to make it onto the BBC’s Sound Of 2012 list, Brooklyn quintet Friends released their debut album, ‘Manifest!’, back at the beginning of June.

Next month the band will be over in the UK for a whole string of festival dates, plus a headline show at the 100 Club at London on 7 Aug. Amidst all that they will re-release ‘I’m His Girl’ on 27 Aug, accompanied by it’s original B-side, their cover of Ghost Town DJs’ ‘My Boo’, plus remixes of the title track by AlunaGeorge and Arthur Baker.

Ahead of all that, we asked drummer Oliver Duncan to put together a playlist for us.

Click here to listen to Oliver’s playlist in Spotify, and then read on to find out more about his choices.

01 Atlas Sound – Sheila
The guitar lick on this is awesome. Out of all the songs named after girls this is the best.

02 The Beatles – Every Little Thing
Such a cool song, the kettle drums are badass.

03 Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska
Bruce took the story of the grizzliest homicide spree in American history and wrote a song about it.

04 Can – All Gates Open
This one synth line at the end puts me into a good mood, its transcendental.

05 Charli XCX – Nuclear Seasons
This is my new favourite.

06 Fear – I Don’t Care About You

07 The Human League – (Keep Feeling) Fascination
I’ve been in a 80s mood lately, so listening to this a lot.

08 Miles Davis – Flamenco Sketches
John Coltrane’s sax solos on this are incredible. Really really good stuff

09 Prince – Controversy
I would include all Prince songs if I could.

10 Squarepusher – The Coathanger
Really catchy tune, it’s weird pop but still Squarepusher.
