Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist to write autobiography
By Andy Malt | Published on Thursday 3 April 2014
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, real name Michael Balzary, is set to publish his autobiography. A release date has not yet been announced, but Headline Publishing has acquired the rights in the UK.
Unlike many such books, Flea will type all the words in his memoir himself, rather than saying them out loud and getting a journalist to turn them into text. Obviously, the reason for the latter option is that most musicians can barely type their own name, let alone a whole book. But Flea has proven himself to be quite good at writing things down in the past.
Announcing the book, Flea said: “I love literature deeply. I view books as sacred things, and in writing my story, I’m going to do my best to honour the form that has played such a huge part in shaping who I am”.
The benchmark for this book has already been set, of course, by RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis, who published his life story ‘Scar Tissue’ (as blabbed to Larry ‘Ratso’ Sloman) in 2004. Flea will apparently talk about his use of hard drugs in the past, though it’s unclear if he will claim, as Kiedis does, that it’s his dog that keeps him from relapsing.
