Reeperbahn kicks off today

By | Published on Thursday 23 September 2010

This edition of the CMU Daily is coming to you live – that’s right, live – from the magnificent city of Hamburg. I say magnificent, so far I’ve only seen the street that separates our hotel from its nearest subway station, and that street is the Reeperbahn, which I don’t think is especially typical of the rest of the city. But I’m sure I’ll find magnificence when I go and explore later.

Team CMU are in town for the much previously reported and very much CMU supported Reeperbahn Festival. Like The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City and In The City in the UK, this is one part city-centre music festival, one part music business convention, with some other arty stuff thrown in for good measure.

Among the long list of acts due to play this year are Cee-Lo Green, Edwyn Collins, Marina And The Diamonds, Frank Turner, James Yuill and Blood Red Shoes plus a stack of newer bands from across the world. Oh, and our SSQ interviewees from this week: PVT, Dan Mangan and Kurran And The Wolfnotes.

The convention side is called Campus and was added to the proceedings last year. This year’s event officially kicks off at 3pm today, with a keynote from that much loved record industry old-timer (and new-timer via his latest venture I suppose, the recently revived Blue Horizon label) Mr Seymour Stein.

A number of other keynotes and a plethora of panel debates will follow, most covering the usual industry topics, though with a refreshingly pan-European mix of pundits taking part. CMU Business Editor and Publisher Chris Cooke will participate in an event called ‘The Geeks Will Kill The Creatives’ tomorrow afternoon.

CMU will be covering the industry side of the event, with reports going live at www.theCMUwebsite.com from this evening through to Sunday, aggregated here in the CMU Daily tomorrow and next week. You can follow all our coverage to date and over the next few days at www.completemusicupdate.com/reeperbahnfestival2010.
