How To Dress Well‘s Tom Krell (pictured), who is essentially the spirit of Janet Jackson nestled inside a thin white man, has let slip deets on his new LP as HTDW, ‘What Is This Heart’. It apparently, states its press release, dips into a wide swell of different themes, not least “isolation, loss, existential anguish, anxiety, fear, lack of control, nightmare, death, pain, pleasure, pride, shame, trust and commitment”, but ultimately “finds redemption in the infinite possibilities of love”.
So basically, life sucks, then you die. Though if you’re lucky, you do so in love. Anyway, ‘What Is This Heart’ will make itself apparent (ie be released) via Domino’s Weird World imprint on 23 Jun. Stream a fresh preview in the mean time in listed track ‘Repeat Pleasure’:
Alexis Taylor, a chip off of Hot Chip, has confirmed a new solo record called ‘Await Barbarians’, his first since 2008’s ‘Rubbed Out’. On-sale via Domino from 10 Jun, it finds Taylor acting all ‘mad genius’ like, playing and taping all the parts all by himself. Except the strings, he didn’t do them. Our favourite US punk foursome Parquet Courts, who won lots of love off the back of 2013’s ‘Light Up Gold’ LP, have just announced a cousin to that in a second album called ‘Sunbathing Animal’. Play the LP’s title song loud as you look at the promo shot that goes with it, in which the band stand around a ladder looking unsure.
New Orleans rock heavies Eyehategod have been away for a while, for various reasons, mainly quite tragic ones, most sad of all the death last year of the band’s long-time drummer Joey LaCaze. LaCaze’s drum tracks live on, though, in the group’s first LP in fourteen years, an eponymous beast of eleven tracks that’s due out on 27 May.
Frontman Mike IX Williams is understandably pleased about it all, and says: “I have to say I don’t believe we’ve lost nary a step in the creation of this album and we think these newer songs are a killer combination of classic Eyehategod mixed along with our best production, mixing, engineering and songwriting in thirteen years”. Try that killer combo for size via ‘Robitussin And Rejection’ now, on SoundCloud.
The four young things of London band Wolf Alice have a new EP titled ‘Creature Songs’ on ice, which they’ll release via Dirty Hit on 26 May. Fans can hear tracks from it live, I bet, when WA hit a series of live dates throughout that same month. One of those tracks, snappy Nirvana bait ‘Moaning Lisa Smile’ (groan), is available to hear now:
