Release round-up: Spiritualized, Thee Oh Sees, SOHN and Nicki Minaj

Rounding up the latest release news…
Ladies and gentlemen, Spiritualized‘s new song is floating in space. Kind of. Really, Jason Pierce et al’s new track – ‘Always Forgetting With You (The Bridge Song)’ – merely (merely!) features noises sampled from NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 space probe missions. It’ll shoot off into shops aboard a ‘Space Project’ compilation, alongside tracks from Beach House, Youth Lagoon, Mutual Benefit, The Antlers and Porcelain Raft, all of which will loop the ‘sounds’ picked up by the probes.
Or rather: “The ‘sounds’ recorded by the Voyager probes aren’t sounds in the conventional sense; rather, they are electromagnetic radiation fluctuations in the magnetosphere of the planets, moons, and large asteroids the Voyager probes travelled near. Each celestial body is composed of different elements, has its own size and mass, and therefore sounds unique”. Split into seven pairs of tracks, each bearing the name of a planet or moon or whatever, ‘Space Project’ is set to be released on Record Store Day, which is this year on 19 Apr.
And here’s the track:
Having taken the briefest “well deserved break” ever, messy rock gods Thee Oh Sees (pictured) are back on their feet. And hey, they’ve made a new LP, which is inevitable (since making LPs is piss-easy for them) and great news. Released, like everything else these days, on Record Store Day, ‘Drop’, as it’s titled, is preceded by its lead single ‘Penetrating Eye’. So examine that here.
4AD-signed artist SOHN, who charts the dark side of pop, has announced his first solo LP, ‘Tremors’. Out 7 Apr, it was made over the course of many long nights, and so ‘sounds’ aptly nocturnal. Or in SOHN/Christopher Taylor’s words: “I wanted ‘Tremors’ to feel like fresh air. There’s something about the way I was working overnight on the album which found its way into the sound. Every night I worked finished with a cold sunrise and a walk home… and to me that’s what ‘Tremors’ sounds like”. Have a blast of one of its tracks, ‘Artifice’, now:
And PS: Ms Nicki Minaj released a new hip hop ditty earlier this week which, it’s safe to say, isn’t her greatest single ever. Still, mid-range marks for trying. It’s titled ‘Lookin Ass Nigga’, so… erm, yeah. The track is taken off Minaj’s label Young Money’s new compilation LP, ‘Rise Of An Empire’, and is available to hear and look at, here:
