Single Review: Shur-I-Kan – One Night In Tokyo (Freerange Records)
By Paul Vig | Published on Wednesday 14 April 2010
Tom Szirtes, aka Shur-I-Kan, returns to Freerange after recently establishing the Dark Energy label with Milton Jackson.
Szirtes is usually a deep house man, but on ‘One Night In Tokyo’ he goes a little off the beaten track and a bit more experimental. Using jazz and samba influences, the track covers a number of bases, with some Jazzanova-styled basslines, and even a nod to the Charleston probably in there somewhere.
B-side ‘Out of Time’ is more of his standard fair – house with little inflections from synths, vocal or sax samples. It’s all credible, and dancefloor quality, with a dash of soul towards the end, and is the better track on this single.
A likeable package. PV
