Single Review: Them Crooked Vultures – New Fang (Sony Music/Columbia)

Them Crooked Vultures

Formed earlier this year, Them Crooked Vultures are every rocker’s wet dream. Comprised of Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme on guitar and vocals, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl on drums and vocals and Led Zeppelin bassist John-Paul Jones, the terrific trio fly to the front line as one of rock n roll’s most superlative super groups.

‘New Fang’ is the first single from their eponymous debut album. A raft of cataclysmic cymbal smashing from Grohl marks the song’s introduction. Nesting alongside cumbersome bass loops, Homme’s jubilant vocals soar effortlessly across the vast musical landscape they paint. In a candid reflection of their musical abilities, ‘New Fang’ is an optimistic anthem sown with frenetically switching time signatures, and percussive reverberations of tectonic proportions.

Take heed, this band can catch the most evasive prey with their predatory instrumental skills. Cry ‘Havoc!’ and let slip the Vultures of war. SG
