Performances by iconic drummer Tony Allen and the legend that is Seun Kuti are hardly likely to disappoint, and Allen, Kuti and the latter’s band, Egypt 80, together put on a mesmerising and humbling show. But both stand out even more from other contemporary musicians and singers for their absolute devotion to the art of performance.It is not enough to be talented or famous for them: each piece is driven by an electrifying passion and a commitment to the audience.
Seun carries the torch of father Fela in the best way possible, both repeating and updating the political messages so crucial to the nature of Afrobeat. Kuti expressed both damnation and hope, but without any posturing. Geldof and co could learn a thing or two. IAB
