US retailer Walmart has announced that it will close its music download store at the end of this month. The service was launched in 2003 shortly after iTunes, offering tracks cheaper than the Apple service. Although initially thought to be a serious competitor, it failed to match the success of the iTunes Store, or many of the other key services that have risen up in recent years, particularly Amazon MP3.

In a statement, the company said it had “recently notified our music partners that we’ve made a business decision to no longer offer MP3 digital tracks as of 29 Aug 2011”, but gave no reason for the decision.
