Single Review: Withered Hand – You’re Not Alone (SL Records/Fence Records)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 29 June 2009
For a long time Edinburgh was the musical equivalent of a small, pathetic tumbleweed. Nowadays the capital is in a maelstrom of musical creativity, with an anti-folk scene bursting at the seams. Withered Hand are the latest bright lights from this flame. This achingly beautiful EP was produced by Kenny Anderson aka King Creosote in a pokey hall in Anstruther. His trademark gritty finish provides heart-wrenching punch to every line uttered by the beguiling Dan Willson. This is never more apparent than in opener ‘No Cigarettes’, where Dan’s yearning voice pierces grainy strumming: “I’m not a smoker, though I said I was/In an elevator stuck between floors”. Songs continue in this vein, through a powerful tribute to Edinburgh artist Paul Carter (‘Big Ten Four’) to ‘R U Courageous?’, with its steady mantra brewing a stunning finale. With this EP, Willson has sealed his fate as a star on the brink of national acclaim. GB
