Naarm/Melbourne trio Acopia make electronic pop that feels like a sigh; quiet, hazy and emotionally precise. Their sound sits somewhere between dream-pop, downtempo and post-punk, all filtered through a kind of soft-focus melancholy.

Formed back in 2018, the group started out with strict rules: slow tempos, minimal kit, keep it simple. Those limits have since fallen away, but the instinctive, understated energy has stayed put.

New single ā€˜Talk About It’ came together in just a few days, built around a looping guitar riff and a mood of gentle unease. It’s about the way we sometimes sidestep hard conversations - not out of apathy, but because staying quiet can feel easier than saying what’s really going on.

ā€œThat’s how we deal with it, we leave it at the front door,ā€ sings Kate Durman, her voice soft and unflinching. The song doesn’t rush to fix anything, it just sits in that emotional in-between.

If you’re in London, you can catch Acopia at The Lexington this Monday (19 May).
