Icelandic singer-songwriter Ásgeir has long specialised in building small worlds you can sink into - intricate folk-pop, soft electronic detailing and weightless falsetto.
His music sits somewhere between the clarity of modern Americana and the spectral quiet you’d expect from an artist raised among mountains and long winters. Touchpoints span Daniel Lanois and Nick Drake through to Adrianne Lenker, Dina Ögon and Saya Gray, but the blend feels very much his own.
New single ‘Sugar Clouds’ stays true to that gentle expansiveness while tugging at something more unsettled. Set in an odd, looping 7/8 time signature, it drifts with a kind of rhythmic imbalance that matches its subject: the restless search for contentment.
“I don’t think I’ve ever truly felt that sense of being satisfied”, Ásgeir says. “But this song imagines what it might feel like”.
