If you’re looking for something more experimental… London-via-Accra artist BLACK FONDU should have your attention.

His sound collides hyperpop, noise, rap, punk and abstract grime into something that manages to sound pretty lawless but ultimately intuitive. Citing influences as far-ranging as Rachmaninoff, MF DOOM and Xiu Xiu, his process leans heavily on subconscious freestyling and instinctive composition. “Simplicity is the way”, he says, though the results are anything but.

He’s just released the video for ‘holla back girl’, a playful snapshot of his world, ahead of his debut EP ‘BLACKFONDUISM’, out this month. It’s got a James-Blakey vibe in the refix of it, in that it’s superbly stylish, but also emphatically chaotic. With a neat Gwen Stefani throwback in the hook, it rips up millennial pop tropes to forge something new.

In his own words the track “opens my textures and my sound alongside something familiar. The best way to do it was to keep it fun and organic, but still my style, my sound”.

At just 21, BLACK FONDU’s is fast emerging as a presence that’s hard to overlook.
