Mexico City’s Girl Ultra grew up absorbing the city’s dance floors and radio culture, Latin rock and 80s pop on the radio, saving up to see Chromeo and Bloc Party live.
She emerged from the SoundCloud R&B wave as one of Mexico’s most exciting young voices, played Coachella, opened for Julieta Venegas in front of 80,000 people at Mexico City’s Zócalo, and became internet friends with Dave 1 of Chromeo around 2017.
That friendship eventually became a full album collaboration. “We had so much time on our hands”, Dave recalls. “We were just like, ‘Yo, let’s do a project together’”.
The result is ‘RRRomeo’ - out 9 Oct on Big Dada - chrome-plated synths, analogue funk, distorted guitars, dub textures and nocturnal romance, co-produced with Chromeo and featuring Buscabulla, Empress Of and Jean Tonique.
New single ‘Te Caigo’ is a good entry point: bassline-heavy, orchestral hits, 80s kinky new-wave pop filtered through Jai Paul’s dreamy but aggressive sensibility.
Lyrically it’s a manifesto for acting on desire rather than waiting around. “Arriving unexpectedly at someone’s house to stop talking and get to action”, she explains. “This is my manifesto for living in the moment and starting to wildly make out today”.
The self-directed video involves a pink thong, a handsome Mexican lawyer and a ballet fight outside a courthouse.
