šŸŽ§ Approved: Glom

Glom is the project of Sean Dunnevant, who cut his teeth in the Washington/Baltimore DIY scene before heading to Brooklyn.

His music offers shimmering riffs, 90s-leaning alt-rock choruses and shoegaze haze, with the tight rhythms of late 80s post-punk. Despite all those genre references, it’s actually beautifully uncomplicated and candid.

With new single ā€˜Mirror’, he’s written one of his most frank songs yet. Dunnevant says that, in the past, he worked to keep his lyrics ā€œveiled and mysteriousā€, but this time he wanted them to reflect what was actually happening in his life.

Pawning Rick Owens clothes to pay rent, sitting in a heatless apartment through the winter, convincing himself it was fine because it was all he could afford. The mess is left in the open, not papered over.

Yet, in all of that, the track is still unashamedly melodic and uplifting: big, crunchy riffs and 90s alt-rock choruses wrapped in shoegaze haze and post-punk drive. It’s magnetic and brimming with charm.

Whatever the subject tackled, there’s no gloom in Glom.
