L.A. Witch exude an aura of effortless cool, whether it’s manifested as the Americana noir and laconic back-to-basics rock n roll of their self-titled debut or the austere adventurism of their sophomore album ‘Play With Fire’.
Their new single ‘Icicle’ sees them journeying out of the proto-punk, psychedelia and gritty riffs of the 70s into the chorus-drenched guitars and forlorn minimalism of Joy Division and early The Cure. A fusion of smooth and smoky garage alchemy with a newfound utilisation of post-punk’s disciplined reserve and icy instrumentation.
“Icicle / Won’t you cleanse my soul / You’re sharp and cold / Purity, come make me bleed”, Sanchez murmurs, her voice detached over new wave-inflected instrumentation.
“I wrote ‘Icicle’ during a really dark time”, Sanchez explains. “The icicle represents both a knife and a crystal - something that cuts but also purifies”. The song’s hypnotic detachment is intentional, her monotone delivery inspired by Ian Curtis.
