MCBAISE is the sun-drenched alias of Cannes-born artist Matthieu Bessudo, better known as mcbess; illustrator, director, multi-instrumentalist and founding force behind Dirty Melody Records. What began as a lo-fi experiment during a slow Christmas has evolved into a cult audio-visual world, where slick yacht rock, woozy funk and kaleidoscopic pop rub up against surreal, hand-drawn animation.

His latest single ‘Cold Cuts’, made with longtime collaborator Matt Christensen under their Muthi project, is a tight, groove-led track that sways somewhere between playful nostalgia and polished oddity. Chopped guitars flicker in and out like half-remembered jingles, velvet synths melt into the background, and a bassline strolls through the mix with total confidence.

The self-directed video swaps animation for dreamy live action, capturing skewed, sun-baked perspectives; as if filmed while lying in the grass, watching the world tilt overhead.

“It bottles the electric joy of being in a supermarket in the 90s,” MCBAISE says, “finally getting your hands on that Sonic & Knuckles Mega Drive cartridge”. It’s strangely specific and oddly perfect.
