Formed at university, Bristol quartet My First Time - Isaac (vocals/guitar), Jordanna (drums), James (guitar/vocals) and Naia (bass/vocals) - channel the scrappy energy of early Blur, the wry storytelling of The Streets, and a splash of Charli XCXâs pop sleaze.
Their new single âSippy Cupâ crashes like a hurled pint glass, all beefed-up snotty riffs, bratty confidence and barbed delivery. Itâs a tongue-in-cheek swing at over-promisers, under-deliverers and the seductive myth of hedonism-as-liberation.
Frontman Isaac calls it âfollowing around a modern-day Caesar of beer drinking and disposable vape smokingâ, a tragic hero of the sofa, forever promised âendless parties, inflated confidence and fleeting euphoriaâ.
âThere are no winners or losers when youâre too drunk to care,â he adds. âThe protagonist remains trapped between the fingers of a broken system. Still, alcohol offers the illusion of freedom, confidence and limitless possibility⌠all you have to do is drink from the golden chaliceâ.
Itâs loud, funny and just self-aware enough to sting, a song about the vices we worship and how they end up owning us.
