🎧 Approved: My First Time

Formed at university, Bristol quartet My First Time - Isaac (vocals/guitar), Jordanna (drums), James (guitar/vocals) and Naia (bass/vocals) - channel the scrappy energy of early Blur, the wry storytelling of The Streets, and a splash of Charli XCX’s pop sleaze.

Their new single ‘Sippy Cup’ crashes like a hurled pint glass, all beefed-up snotty riffs, bratty confidence and barbed delivery. It’s a tongue-in-cheek swing at over-promisers, under-deliverers and the seductive myth of hedonism-as-liberation.

Frontman Isaac calls it “following around a modern-day Caesar of beer drinking and disposable vape smoking”, a tragic hero of the sofa, forever promised “endless parties, inflated confidence and fleeting euphoria”.

“There are no winners or losers when you’re too drunk to care,” he adds. “The protagonist remains trapped between the fingers of a broken system. Still, alcohol offers the illusion of freedom, confidence and limitless possibility… all you have to do is drink from the golden chalice”.

It’s loud, funny and just self-aware enough to sting, a song about the vices we worship and how they end up owning us.
