There’s not much out there on Prince 85 - but you’ve likely heard their work. The anonymous producer has contributed to tracks by The Weeknd, Metro Boomin, Future, 21 Savage, Lil Wayne and others, all while quietly building a solo world that’s far more off-kilter.
New single ‘All Of Us’ is a maximalist thrill ride - opening with an abrasive metal guitar riff before hurtling through 80s electro, 90s rave, chopped-up drum samples and distorted techno. It’s harsh, fast and cinematic, eventually giving way to an unexpectedly melodic resolution. Think Daft Punk meets Vangelis in a warehouse somewhere off-planet.
That sci-fi feel isn’t accidental. In the words of the artist’s own surreal press note: “Fascinated by the music produced by humans, which it calls ‘noise’, Prince 85 strives to apprehend it, to perfect it, and to extract its essence to create a universal language. A language that transcends the limits of the Earth”.
Alien mythologies aside, there’s something genuinely otherworldly here, a producer picking apart genres and pushing things somewhere strange and new.
