With Brighton quartet PROJECTOR industrial drum machines, angular post-punk and rant-pop share the same space. New track ‘I Need A Lie Down’ was designed to “make people feel sick and culminate in a horrific wall of noise” when played live, which sounds horrible but (at least on record) sounds great

Brighton quartet PROJECTOR have been going their own way since 2018 - industrial drum machines, angular post-punk, lush melody and frenzied rant-pop all sharing the same space, acid-soaked country sitting next to Incesticide-era grunge somewhere in the middle.

Two albums in, and they’re one of the more interesting and unpredictable bands on the UK underground circuit.

New single ‘I Need A Lie Down’ arrives with a new guitarist, Rowan McIntosh, previously their session player and now a fully-fledged member (“the idiot said yes and now we don’t have to pay him”, says frontman Edward Ensbury). The song was recorded with him, and it sounds like a band excited to be playing together again.

It’s “pretty deranged”, says Ensbury. “It came out so mad and all over the place”. Bassist and vocalist Lucy Sheehan is more precise, adding, “I wanted to write something to play live that would maybe make people feel sick and culminate in a horrific wall of noise”. Which sounds horrible on paper, but recorded? Great.

They support Bo Ningen at The Lexington in London on 16 Nov, with a new body of work due in 2027.
