Isle Of Wight trio ugly ozo dwell in a languid space between grungey bedroom pop and doom-gaze.
Formed just a year ago by Jessica Baker with her sister Boo on bass and Tristan Northard on drums, the band have wasted no time. They treat ugly ozo as an anxious sonic diary, exposing the raw edges of the female experience.
A fast-rising catalogue of searing, self-reflective indie bangers marks them out as one to watch. New single ‘hi, how are you?’ was written during a stretch of burnout and emotional numbness, and it carries that weight.
“I wrote ‘hi, how are you?’ at a time when everything felt pretty hollow and grey”, Baker says. “I felt like I really was running on empty, just plodding through the motions of every day without really feeling any fulfilment or satisfaction”.
She describes the track as a tug of war between self-doubt and determination. It drifts and drags, but it bites all the same.
